De toutes les manifestations affectives, telles qu'elles sont saisies et catégorisées par les langues et les cultures, l'émotion est sans doute à la fois la plus généralement reconnue, et aussi la plus facilement identifiable à un processus sémiotique : dans les interactions quotidiennes, elle se présente en effet comme un phénomène somatique observable, dont on suppose qu'il « exprime » un état intérieur du corps propre et de la chair ; dans les textes et les sémiotiques-objets « construites » on peut aussi rechercher les transpositions (verbales, visuelles, etc.) de ces expressions somatiques. Ainsi le terme « émotion » peut-il désigner aussi bien des expressions que des contenus, mais à une condition qui implique de grands retentissements dans la théorie sémiotique : l'« incorporation » des structures, l'« incarnation » des actants ; en somme : la prise en compte du corps dans la fonction sémiotique et dans les processus d'énonciation et de symbolisation.

Pop songs offer a good opportunity for the study of emotions. The unavoidable presence of the voice — an extension of the singer's body that carries both melody and lyrics — sustains a connection between the enunciator's emotions and his/her work. Such an inherent bond is independent of the classical operations of engagement/disengagement (embrayage/ débrayage), even if they are linguistically marked in the text. Behind the musical form that tends to systematize the melody in a strict frame, there is always a force generated by the intonation of spoken language that disturbs the expected meters by contracting and extending the syllables and, in that way, expresses the intentions of the enunciator. The melody may achieve its stability through different processes that will enable the articulation of the emotions arising from the text. In a continuous process, the song will have its motifs reproduced over and over or it will evolve gradually throughout its range. The discontinuous process will place emphasis on intervallic jumps or on the introduction of new parts to the song. This article proposes an evaluation of the compatibility between melody and lyrics, through an analysis of the Brazilian song ‘Eu sei que vou te amar' by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes.

Résumé La signification de l'émotion — considérée comme une phorie , charge ou énergie affective qui compromet le corps du sujet (en tant que « sema » et « soma ») — peut être saisie dans les émotions qui sont configurées dans le'discours. Si la phorie (de pherein/phore , porter) est la charge affective qui fluctue sur l'axe de l'intensité d'un schéma tensif, l'émotion serait ce quipousse la phorie, c'est-à-dire le mouvement, la motion (é-motion), ce qui la fait sortir hors de l'axe même. Ayant en perspective la totalité de la structure du sujet et les paramètres qui englobent le mouvement et la quiétude où l'on peut observer des figures comme le spasme, l'évanouissement, l'inhibition, la colère, etc, et les actes consécutifs, notre travail se limitera à essayer de découvrir la configuration d'une émotion de type dysphorique, tant en ce qui concerne ses augmentations que ses diminutions, telle qu'elle apparaît sur le tableau de Francis Bacon intitulé : Autoportrait . Étant donné ses caractéristiques, le texte choisi nous incite à envisager de façon sémiotique la figure de l'auteur comme un acteur du discours et ceci, de toute façon, nous force à une coopération interdisciplinaire avec l'Histoire de l'Art, tout en nous donnant l'avantage de pouvoir explorer la participation de l'émotion dans le processus constitutif de cette oeuvre en particulier (ainsi que l'ensemble auquel elle appartient et qui, en principe, pourrait être reconnu comme la série du deuil) et l'intervention des effets transformateurs d'une telle émotion sur la totalité de l'æuvre du peintre.

Résumé Cette étude se présente comme l'analyse concrète, dans la perspective définie dans Passions sans nom (Landowski 2004) d'une série d'images publicitaires : des photos de ces « beautés » qui ornent nos magazines, visiblement émues, non par leur propre situation, mais par le regard concupiscent que nous, lecteurs-voyeurs, sommes sensés porter sur leur corps dénudés, désirants et offerts … Ainsi se construit, avec le tiers spectateur qui s'ajoute par principe à cette relation duelle, le triangle du désir consumériste. Il s'agit en somme de montrer que l'émotion n'est pas toujours où on la cherche, et que les voies de l' « union » et de la « contagion » affectives n'empruntent pas toujours le chemin de la représentation figurative.

Résumé En mettant en relation la thymie et l'enthymème, on se propose de replacer la question de la sensibilisation émotionnelle au cœur de la rhétorique générale. Elle y est tantôt assumée comme principe opératoire (Aristote), tantôt exaltée comme finalité (Pseudo-Longin), tantôt soupçonnée comme menace sur la conduite raisonnée des arguments (Perelman). l'instabilité du statut de l'émotion dans l'histoire de la rhétorique est rapprochée de sa phénoménalité même, à travers les propositions de G. Simondon sur la composante affectivo-émotive dans l'individuation. l'appropriation sémiotique du concept de thymie invite plus spécifiquement, sous cet éclairage, à réarticuler le raisonnement propre à la rhétorique comme « enthymie ». On dégage ensuite les éléments thymiques au sein de l'enthymème (phénomènes de suspension, de bifurcation, de provocation), avant de présenter une saisie de l'émotion, à partir de la théorie des instances de discours, comme une condensation des instances.

Résumé Le corps persuade tout autant que le verbe. Il persuade même à l'intérieur de l'exercice de la parole. En s'appuyant sur une théorie sémiotique du corps (cf. Jacques Fontanille, Séma et soma. Les figures du corps ), on examinera les différentes dimensions de l'efficacité persuasive du corps : le corps en tant qu'enveloppe et surface d'inscription, en tant que chair et motricité, en tant que référence déictique, en tant que contenant « habité » de récits et de scènes, notamment. Cette étude se déclinera en deux grands pans : (i) d'un côté, l'ensemble des émotions suscitées et manipulées par la construction et la proposition d'un éthos corporel de l'énonciateur (les approches les plus courantes de l'éthos se limitent en général à la construction des rôles actantiels et modaux, et des représentations figuratives de l'énonciateur) ; (ii) de l'autre côté, l'ensemble des pathèmes associés à la production d'arguments de nature « sensible », et faisant appel aux figures du corps de l'énonciataire. On prendra pour exemple le cas du discours de témoignage, où le corps du témoin, sa situation, sa présence, ses réactions, ses perceptions et ses émotions est tout particulièrement sollicité. Le cas de la persuasion par « compassion » sera aussi exploité.

Résumé À partir de l'analyse des Carnets de Malte Laurids Brigge de Rainer Maria Rilke, ce travail proposera une approche sémiotique des « motions de l'áme ». Nous suggérerons de considérer les émotions non seulement comme les « manifestations somatiques de la passion », mais comme lemouvement (la motion ) qui emporte la passion vers l'extérieur, en imprégnant de son « arôme » le corps qui la contient et le monde dans lequel ellese verse. Si l'homogénéisation de l'existence sémiotique par la médiation du proprioceptive suppose un processus qui tend vers l'équilibre, il est intéressant de s'interroger sur les cas où le déséquilibre initial persiste, de façon que les vibrations de l'áme, ne pouvant pas se constituer comme des états proprement dits, se prolongent indéfiniment et confinent le sujet et l'objet au domaine de l'inachevé. L'émotion est le mouvement résultant de l'inadéquation entre le sujet percevant et l'objet perçu, mouvement en vertu duquel le premier s'écoule dans le deuxième pour compenser un manque fondamental. Aussi l'étude des (é)motions en tant que pré-supposants de l'état, implique-t-elle l'exploration d'une subjectivité dynamique dont les signes s'inscrivent autant sur le corps du sujet que sur le corps du monde - et, au niveau de la textualisation, sur le corps de la page blanche, car la motivation dernière des Carnets serait le versement de la subjectivité par l'écriture.

Résumé La sémantique de l'émotion est fondée dans les vécus de signification et elle demande alors un point de vue interne ; en particulier, il faut préciser des conditions d'émiotique de l'expérience, où la corporalité peut être saisie comme une altérité propre dotée d'un roôle énonciatif à part entière. Ainsi, nous avons choisi d'étudier l'émotion à partir de terrains fertiles (mais opposés) pourson émergence, c'est-à-dire le vertige et la forme de vie. On doit éclaircir, par exemple, comment une forme de vie non seulement prévoit des fractures émotionnelles, mais aspire encore à se garantiren vue de raffermir la connexion entre valences contractées/négociées et valences éprouvées, afin de retrouver une cohésion entre les différents axes identitaires. Par contre, le vertige est une sensation qui se constitue à partir de : a) un émergence et la gestion du sens de l'émotion au sein d'une ségarement du cadre inter-actantiel stabilisé ; b) une incertitude épistémique relative à ses afférences intéro - ou extéroceptives ; c) une désolidarisation de la polysensorialité. Les émotions vertigineuses sont alors plus basiquesque les autres, car leur émergence n'est pas fonction d'une relation interactantielle visée, mais d'une déstabilisation de l'assiette perceptive et d'une économie figurative dans laquelle les valeurs positionnelles en vigueur sont strictement liées à la vulnérabilité du corps.

Peirce — both translator and translatee — left a certain indication of translation into a thousand tongues . Unfortunately, he did not expand on this idea any further, and its significance for semiotic purposes will require some interpretive extrapolation — as will be apparent in the contributions to this special section of Semiotica dedicated to the vital virtues (and errors) of semio-translation (a word I coined). The articles, written by semiotic translation theoreticians and critics, suggest the quality that made Peirce a vital teacher (Sebeok's term). The creative contributions follow the fingerprints inspired not only by Peirce, but also by Saussure, Bakhtin, Jakobson, Lotman, and others, committed to the dense web of semiosis-oriented translation. Translation, including interpretation, holds a central place in semiotic theory.

Bible translation over the past half century has increasingly supplemented its traditional philological-linguistic approach with a wide variety of disciplines ranging from archaeology to cultural studies. This turn toward an interdisciplinary approach is especially true of new media Bible translation with its theory and practice now engaging virtually every digital and screen medium. Not surprisingly, (new media) Bible translation has discovered the field of semiotics, thanks in large measure to the work of translation scholars such as Dinda L. Gorlée and Ubaldo Stecconi, whose pioneering research into Charles Sanders Peirce has unearthed a gold mine of conceptual and even practical applications of semiotics to translation research, training, evaluation, and production. In this essay, we set out some of the foundational elements of Peircean semiotics in its application to Bible translation, including new media Bible translation. In particular, the insights of semiotics into the process of sign production and meaning making will add exponentially to the resources for Bible translators.

Translation activity in culture cannot take place in isolation from experience of culture and technological environment. Underlying the diversity of communication processes is the progression from printed media towards hypermedia and new media. In this new situation, the peculiarity of translation activity consists in the actualization of intralingual and intersemiotic translation alongside interlingual translation: first, in synthetic form, combining all three types of translation (thus also interlinguistic translation can be regarded as comprising intralingual and intersemiotic translation as well); and second, in analytic form, that is, as three autonomous types of translation producing diverse types of texts. The widening of the boundaries of translation process results in the intensified search for appropriate methodologies. One indication of this is the repeated reconceptualization or further elaboration of Jakobson's typology of intralingual, interlingual, and intersemiotic translation at the intersection of semiotics, translation studies, analysis of culture, and communication. At the same time, translation studies show signs of methodological innovation, accompanied by semiotic steps. Semiotics, on the other hand, is at the same time undergoing an actualization of translation issues, and the concept of semiotranslation refers now to the possibilities of methodological synthesis between translation studies and semiotics.

Peirce's writings are understood and translated in their interweaved fragments without final form. The broken and unbroken fragmentary items of language correspond to degrees of tone, token, and type as Peirce's building blocks of his three superlative categories. The collective and private meanings of Firsts, Seconds, and Thirds are embodied in vague bricolages and grounding paraphrases toward the (maybe idealized) whole manuscript version. Semio-translation, the process of reading and translating from one language into another, speaks about metaphrase, periphrase, and superphrase in order to construct the proposed verbal meaning, corresponding to the judgmental semiosis of Peirce's writings. The text of his entire manuscripts (in edited and unedited versions) give the readers (including translators as privileged readers) the opportunity of various degrees of justification and doubt of possible meanings, casted on what is the fragmentariness, elementariness, and holism of his oeuvre. Using the available translations of Peirce's English writings into German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, and other languages, translation criticism perceives different upward and downward habits at work, creating acceptable and unacceptable solutions in the target language of philosophical and narrative genres. As practical examples of the degrees of formal and dynamical translations, interlingual and intralingual translations of Peirce's terms and sentences such as ‘lithium,’ ‘university,’ ‘apple pie,’ ‘musement,’ ‘decapitated frog,’ and the versions of the ‘pragmatic maxims’ — all of them fallibly (and sometimes fallaciously) translated into single and replicated fragments of scripture composed by various translators into various languages are discussed.

In this paper, our focus is on the hypertext as the reading-text in a strong sense; that is, as privileging the reader. The hypothesis we intend to verify is whether or not the hypertext may become a method for translation. Taking the hypertext as our starting point, we shall delineate a methodics with important implications for translative practice. Destination of the text and, therefore, its intention of being translated concerns the text's relation to language understood as a modeling device, as the ‘play of musement’ (Peirce), therefore capable of producing an ‘infinite number of possible worlds’ (Leibniz). Translatability concerns the relation between text and language . The more a text has crossed a historical-natural language in the direction of what Benjamin calls ‘pure language’ (this is the crossing over which makes for a literary text), not only the more is it translatable, but the more it calls for translation.

This paper focuses on the essential connection between sign and translation, which implies thematization of the relation between semiotics and translation theory and practice. A theory of translation cannot prescind from semiotics of translation. Vice versa, sign theory can benefit from contributions from translation theory and practice, whether a question of sign in general (which uniquely subsists in relation to the interpretant that translates it), or of specifically human semiosis understood as metasemiosis (that is, reflection through signs on signs), and, therefore, as trans-semiosis. From a semiotic perspective the relation between original text and translated text is a relation between interpreted sign and interpretant sign. This relation is characterized by iconicity — it is a special type of similarity relation. From this viewpoint, a typology of translation like Jakobson's can be related to a sign typology like Peirce's. The question of iconicity is also relevant because verbal language avails itself not only of concepts but also metaphors. A difficulty in translation is that of translating metaphors from the language of others. In Peirce's classification, metaphor is an iconic sign. It is not incidental that an important theorizer in the field of semiotics, Victoria Welby, described signs not only in terms of interpretation but also of translation, and that she devoted special attention to the question of metaphor. The semiotic approach also throws light on a central problem in translation theory — that of translatability. Whether a question of ordinary language, or literary language, in particular the poetic, or of specialized, sectorial languages, the question of translatability cannot be dealt with prescinding from what Sebeok calls ‘primary modeling’ or what Rossi-Landi describes as ‘common speech,’ and subsequently ‘linguistic work.’

Disciplinary identity depends on how the disciplinary research object is conceived of. If translation studies is a discipline studying translation and translating, it is natural that it can define its identity at the intersection between translation and translating. This intersection is translation process. The need for an epistemological description of translation process arises form the need to make the process describable or to find a possibility of its optimum description. To do this translation studies needs an elementary model of translation process that would ensure the comparability of different translations and describability of translation culture. New interest in the evaluation of translation quality and in the linguistic nature of translation brings along the necessity to reconceptualize different trends in translation studies. Translation studies is on the verge of a new self-description, and the language and attitudes of this self-description should derive from a systemic understanding of the research object of translation studies.
