The application of one-dimensional nanofibers in the fabrication of an electrode greatly improves the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to its advantages on electron transfer and mass transport. Various mixed ionic-electronic conducting materials with perovskites and Ruddlesden-Popper-type metal oxide structures are successfully electrospun into nanofibers in recent years mostly in solvent solution and some in melt forms, which are used as anode and cathode electrodes for SOFCs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the structure, electrochemical performance, and development of anode and cathode nanofiber electrodes including processing, structure, and property characterization. The focuses are first on the precursor, applied voltage, and polymer in the material electrospinning process, the performance of the fiber, potential limitation and drawbacks, and factors affecting fiber morphology, and sintering temperature for impurity-free fibers. Information on relevant methodologies for cell fabrication and stability issues, polarization resistances, area specific resistance, conductivity, and power densities are summarized in the paper, and technology limitations, research challenges, and future trends are also discussed. The concluded information benefits improvement of the material properties and optimization of microstructure of the electrodes for SOFCs.

Environmental pollution is one of the most important problems in present-day society. Governments and international organizations try to mitigate this problem by enforcing strict laws concerning the emission of certain pollutants. This process is especially rapidly applied concerning air pollution. In the past, the main focus was placed on the regulation of the energy sector and of land-based transportation emissions, as they produce the vast majority of pollutants. Today, the emphasis is shifted toward marine-based transportation, as it is anticipated that after the year 2020, the emission from sea-based sources (with respect to sulfur and nitrogen oxides) will exceed the land-based emission. One of the technologies that have been successfully implemented in industries to decrease the level of air pollution caused by NO x and SO x is electron beam flue gas treatment. This review shows the chemical principles of this method as well as the chemical engineering issues and its development and modifications to suit the changing needs of industries worldwide.

With the rapid growth of economics and nanotechnology, a significant portion of the anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals and nanoparticles (NPs) enters wastewater streams and discharges to wastewater treatment plants, thereby potentially posing a risk to the bacteria that facilitate the successful operation of the enhanced biological phosphorus (P) removal (EBPR) process. Although some efforts have been made to obtain detailed insights into the effects of heavy metals and metal (oxide) nanoparticles [Me(O)NPs], many unanswered questions remain. One question is whether the toxicity of Me(O)NPs originates from the released metal ions. This review aims to holistically evaluate the effects of heavy metals and Me(O)NPs. The interactions among extracellular polymeric substances, P, and heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] are presented and discussed for the first time. The potential mechanisms of the toxicity of heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] are summarized. Additionally, mathematical models of the toxicity and removal of P, heavy metals, and Me(O)NPs are overviewed. Finally, knowledge gaps and opportunities for further study are discussed to pave the way for fully understanding the inhibition of heavy metals [Me(O)NPs] and for reducing their inhibitory effect to maximize the reliability of the EBPR process.
