Fouling is the accumulation of unwanted materials on surfaces that causes detrimental effects on its function. The accumulated materials can be composed of living organisms (biofouling), nonliving substances (inorganic and/or organic), or a combination of both of them. Mineral fouling occurs when a process uses cooling water supersaturated with mineral salt crystals (i.e. hard water). Precipitation ensues on heat transfer surfaces whenever the inversely soluble dissolved calcium salt ions are exposed to high temperature. Mineral salts, dirt, waxes, biofilms, whey proteins, etc. are common deposits on the heat exchanger surfaces, and they create thermal resistance and increase pressure drop and maintenance costs of plants. Fouling of dissolved salts and its mitigation have been studied in detail by varying process parameters, surface materials, coatings on surfaces, additives, etc. by many researchers. In the present stage, researchers have considered polymeric additives, environmental friendly nanoparticles, natural fibers, and thermal conductive coatings (metallic and polymeric) in the study of mitigation of fouling. A better understanding of the problem and the mechanisms that lead to the accumulation of deposits on surfaces will provide opportunities to reduce or even eliminate the problem in certain situations. The present review study has focused on fouling phenomena, environment of fouling, heat exchanger fouling in design, and mitigation of fouling. The findings could support in developing the improved heat exchanger material surfaces, retain efficiency of the heat exchangers, and prolong their continuous operation.

Microfluidics is an emerging branch of science that has significant applications in various fields. In this review paper, after a brief introduction to the concept of photocatalysis, nanoparticle preparation methods and film formation techniques have been studied. Nanoparticle synthesis in microfluidic systems and microreactor types for on-chip photocatalyst synthesis and challenges of nanoparticles handling in microsystems have been reviewed. To resolve particle polydispersity and microchannel clogging, a good suggestion can be the use of droplet-based microreactors. The configurative designs for the microfluidic reactor with immobilized photocatalysts, their applications, and their challenges have been comprehensively addressed. The three main challenges ahead the immobilized photocatalytic microfluidic reactors are optimal light distribution, prevention of the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and improved mass transfer. Internal light-emitting diodes with a waveguide can resolve the number one challenge of photocatalysis application in optofluidic reactors, that is, light distribution.

The highly progressive membrane separation technology challenges conventional separation processes such as ion exchange, distillation, precipitation, solvent extraction, and adsorption. The integration of many desired properties such as low energy consumption, high removal efficiency, affordable costs, suitable selectivity, acceptable productivity, ease of scale-up, and being environmentally friendly have made the membranes capable of being replaced with other separation technologies. Combination of membrane technology and nanoscience has revolutionized the nano-engineered materials, e.g. nanocomposites applied in advanced membrane processes. Polymer composites containing carbon nanostructures are promising choices for membrane fabrication owing to their enhanced chemistry, morphology, electromagnetic properties, and physicochemical stability. Carbon nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nano graphene oxides (NGOs), and fullerenes are among the most popular nanofillers that have been successfully applied in modification of polymer membranes. Literature review shows that there is no comprehensive overview reporting the modification of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using carbon nanofibers, nano-activated carbons, and carbon nanospheres. The present overview focuses on the applications of carbon nanostructures mainly CNTs and NGOs in the modification of MMMs and emphasizes on the application of CNTs and NGO particles.

Methylene blue (MB) (3,7-bis (dimethylamino)-phenothiazin-5-ium chloride) is a harmful pollutant and has been long been known for its detrimental effects on human health. Over the recent years, many strategies including reduction, oxidation, biological and photochemical degradation have been reported for converting this harmful dye into commercially useful products. Among the aforementioned strategies, the nanocatalytic reduction of MB into its reduced counterpart, i.e. leucomethylene blue, is considered more preferable because it has been reported to have numerous applications in various industrial fields in the academic literature. The reduction of MB is the kinetically unfavorable reaction. Henceforth, various nanocatalytic systems utilizing different kinds of stabilization mediums have reportedly been used for speeding up this particular reaction. This article attempts to not only describe the fundamental properties of the reduction reaction of MB but also present the classification of the recently reported nanocatalytic assemblies on the basis of the utilized supporting medium. Various techniques used for the characterization of nanocatalytic systems reported for the reduction of MB have been summarized in this review. The thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanistic studies of this nanocatalytic reaction have also been narrated here. This critical review has been written comprehensively to abridge the recent research progress in the assemblage of nanocatalytic systems used for the reduction of MB and to propose some new ideas for further development in this area.
