Im Jahr 2000 wurde im Vorfeld des Baus der Autobahn A 4 von Niederschlesien nach Sachsen ein großes, in das Mesolithikum datierendes Lager entdeckt, das auf einer Fläche von einem ha ergraben werden konnte. Dabei wurden u.a. mehrere isoliert gelegene Feuersteinkonzentrationen erkannt, die von unterschiedlichen im Lager durchgeführten Tätigkeiten zeugen. Auch wenn in Krępnica vor allem lithische Funde dominieren, so finden sich dennoch organische Spuren in Form tierischer Knochen. Einer der Befunde enthielt außerdem menschliche Überreste. Anhand von Radiokarbon-Daten (8800 BP und 8300–8200 BP) lassen für das Lager zwei Besiedlungsphasen belegen. Seine Nutzungsdauer fällt also in das Boreal. Dieser Artikel stellt Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen aus den Jahren 2004 bis 2008 vor, während gegenwärtig in Krępnica weitere Ausgrabungen stattfinden. Un grand campement, situé à Krępnica, en Pologne occidentale, fut découvert en 2000 lors de fouilles de surface précédant la construction d'une autoroute (A 4) qui doit relier la basse Silésie à la Saxe. Un hectare de la zone où se situe le campement a été fouillé jusqu'ici et plusieurs concentrations de silex isolées dans l'espace ont été mises au jour. Ces concentrations sont les vestiges qui témoignent de différentes activités réalisées dans le campement. Même si le site a un caractère très minéral, des vestiges organiques sous forme d'os d'animaux accompagnent les artefacts lithiques. L'une des concentrations contenait même des restes humains. Les datations au radiocarbone établissent deux périodes d'occupation du campement (8800 BP et 8300–8200 BP), ce qui correspond au Boréal. Cet article discute encore les recherches menées de 2004 à 2008, les fouilles étant toujours en cours à Krępnica. A new, spacious Mesolithic encampment situated in Krępnica, in Western Poland, was discovered in 2000 during surface excavations preceding construction of the A4 motorway connecting Lower Silesia and Saxony. So far a hectare of the area where the encampment is situated has been excavated and several spatially isolated flint material concentrations have been discovered. The concentrations constitute remains testifying to diversified activities carried out in the encampment. Even though the site is of a mineral character, stone artefacts are accompanied by organic remains in the form of animal bones. One of the objects has also provided human remains. Radiocarbon dating restricts the encampment's age to two settlement episodes from the periods of 8800 BP and 8300–8200 years ago, i.e., the Boreal period. This text discusses the research carried out in 2004–2008, although excavations in Krępnica are still in progress.

Der Beitrag stellt drei mesolithische Geweihlochstäbe der Fundstellen Twedt-Buschau, Verchen (beide Norddeutschland) und Krzyż (Polen) vor, die nach Meinung der Autoren als zoomorphe Darstellungen interpretiert werden können. Die Basis der Abwurfstangen wurde jeweils teilweise abgearbeitet und die Sprosse als spitzer Stumpf zugerichtet. Die so entstandene Form kann als stilisierter Kopf eines Elches angesprochen werden. Die ähnliche Zurichtung der Objekte und die nahezu übereinstimmende absolute Datierung der Geweihstäbe von Twedt-Buschau und Krzyż in das frühe Boreal unterstützen diese Hypothese. Die skulptierten Geweihstäbe, die ein neues Element mesolithischer Kunst der nordeuropäischen Tiefebene repräsentieren, werden abschließend in die Entwicklung der spätpaläolithischen/mesolithischen Kunst eingeordnet. Cet article présente trois bâtons percés mésolithiques trouvés sur les sites de Twedt-Buschau, Verchen (tous deux en Allemagne du Nord) et Krzyż (Pologne), dans lesquels les auteurs voient des représentations zoomorphes. Ces bois tombés ont été partiellement travaillés à leur base et les andouillers taillés en pointe arrondie. La forme qui en résulte peut alors être perçue comme la tête stylisée d'un élan. La taille similaire de ces trois objets et la datation absolue, presque identique, des bâtons percés de Twedt-Buschau et Krzyż au début du Boréal renforcent cette hypothèse. Ces bâtons percés et sculptés, qui représentent un nouvel élément de l'art mésolithique des plaines de l'Europe septentrionale, sont ensuite intégrés dans l'évolution artistique du Paléolithique final au Mésolithique. The article discusses three perforated antler objects from Twedt-Buschau, Verchen (northern Germany) and Krzyż (Poland) which can be interpreted as zoomorphic representations. The roses of the antlers show cutmarks and the lower tines were modified into pin like stumps. The antlers are identified as abstract elk heads. This is supported by the very similar shape of the objects and the fact that the pieces from Twedt-Buschau and Krzyż date to the same early Boreal period. In the final chapter the meaning of the new evidence is discussed in the frame work of the development of Late Palaeolithic to Mesolithic art.

Jüngste Entdeckungen im westlichen Teil Anatoliens werfen ein neues Licht auf die Herkunft von Europas ersten Neolithikern. Vor 50 Jahren schlug James Mellaart vor, dass sich frühneolithische Gemeinschaften in Griechenland und auf dem Balkan gemeinsame Vorfahren in Westanatolien und hier besonders in der Fundstelle von Hacılar teilen. Derzeitige Ausgrabungen entlang der ägäischen Küste der Türkei und in der erweiterten Marmara-Region, auf halbem Weg zwischen Hacılar und Europa, bestätigen diese Verbindung und vermitteln jetzt ein deutlich komplexeres und akkurateres Bild der Ausbreitung des Neolithikums nach Südosteuropa. Die nochmalige Evaluierung der absoluten und relativen Chronologien, die in dieser Arbeit vorgeschlagen werden, identifizieren drei chrono-geographische Horizonte (zwei definitive, ein mutmaßlicher), jeder charakterisiert durch ein unterschiedliches neolithisches ‘Paket’. Es sind wiederholte Migrationen aus dem Zentralanatolischen Plateau, und darüber hinaus aus der Levante, die in der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrtausends vor Christus wahrscheinlich die neolithische Lebens- und Wirtschaftsweise nach Europa gebracht haben. Nachweise für noch frühere neolithische Ausbreitungen bleiben hingegen nach wie vor unsicher. Les découvertes récentes en Anatolie de l'Ouest apportent un éclairage nouveau sur l'origine des premiers fermiers européens. Il y a cinquante ans, James Mellaart suggérait que les communautés du Néolithique Ancien en Grèce et dans les Balkans résultaient d'une ascendance commune en Anatolie de l'Ouest, plus précisément à Hacılar. Les fouilles en cours sur les côtes Turques de la Mer Égée et sur le pourtour de la Mer de Marmara, à mi-chemin entre Hacılar et l'Europe, confirment ce lien et donnent une vision plus précise et plus complexe des processus de diffusion du Néolithique dans le Sud-Est Européen. Le réexamen des chronologies absolue et relative proposé dans cet article permet d'identifier trois horizons chrono-géographiques (deux confirmés, un troisième reste à établir), caractérisés chacun par un ‘bagage’ néolithique différent. Des migrations successives à partir du Plateau Central Anatolien et, plus en amont, du Levant, dans la seconde moitié du 7 ème millénaire avant J.-C. ont probablement diffusé le mode de vie et de subsistance néolithique à l'Europe. L'existence de diffusions néolithiques plus anciennes reste cependant incertaine. Recent discoveries in Western Anatolia have shed new light on the origins of Europe's first farmers. Fifty years ago, James Mellaart suggested that Early Neolithic communities in Greece and the Balkans shared a common ancestry in Western Anatolia at the site of Hacılar. Current excavations conducted along the Aegean coast of Turkey and in the broader Marmara region, halfway between Hacılar and Europe, confirm this link and provide a more complex and accurate picture of the spread of farming to Southeast Europe. The re-evaluation of the absolute and relative chronologies proposed in this paper identifies three chrono-geographical horizons (two definite, one tentative), each characterised by a different Neolithic ‘package’. Repeated migrations from the Central Anatolian plateau, and further on from the Levant, probably spread farming to Europe in the second half of the 7 th millennium BC. The evidence for earlier Neolithic dispersals remains ambiguous.

Im Rahmen eines durch das Land Niedersachsen finanzierten Projektes wurden makro- und mikroskopische Untersuchungen, Röntgenuntersuchungen, 3D-Computertomographien sowie Metallanalysen (Spurenelement- und Bleiisotopenanalysen) zu niedersächsischen Schwertern der älteren Bronzezeit angefertigt. Die Auswertung ergibt eine Reihe neuer Erkenntnisse, unter anderem wurde an zwei nordischen Vollgriffschwertern eine ungewöhnliche Verzierungstechnik der Knaufplatte durch eingesetzte Stifte festgestellt. Die Untersuchungen bestätigen zudem die Annahme, dass die nordischen Vollgriffschwerter und die aus dem südlichen Mitteleuropa stammenden Achtkantschwerter von den Trägern unterschiedlicher Handwerkstraditionen hergestellt wurden. Bemerkenswert ist, dass sich bei nordischen Vollgriffschwertern in begrenztem Umfang Hinweise auf die Adaption der süddeutschen Guss-, vor allem aber Schäftungstechnik finden, womit sich komplexe Beziehungen und ein selektiver Technologietransfer zwischen den beiden Handwerkstraditionen abzeichnen. Zudem kann belegt werden, dass handwerkliche Traditionen der frühbronzezeitlichen Vollgriffdolche in der Technik der mittelbronzezeitlichen Vollgriffschwerter fortleben. Für die Achtkantschwerter ist eine Produktion in mehreren kleineren Werkstätten anzunehmen. Die schon länger postulierten Werkstattkreise der nordischen Vollgriffschwerter konnten aufgrund der geringen Datenbasis leider nicht nach technischen Kriterien überprüft werden. Die Distribution von Achtkantschwertern in den Norden kann durch Import von süddeutsch verzierten Stücken sowie unverzierten Schwertern, die im Norden eigenhändig verziert wurden, erklärt werden. Dabei kam es zu gegenseitigen Kontakten und Beeinflussungen. Neben ihrer primären Funktion als Waffen ist den Schwertern zweifellos auch soziale und symbolische Bedeutung beizumessen. Dans le cadre d'un projet financé par le Land de Basse-Saxe, des épées de cette région appartenant au Bronze ancien furent soumises à des examens macro- et microscopiques, à des radioscopies, des scanographies 3D ainsi qu'à des analyses de métaux (analyses des éléments traces et des isotopes du plomb). L'étude livre une série de nouveaux résultats, dont l'identification, d'une technique de décor à l'aide de clous fixés dans la plaque du pommeau de deux épées nordiques à poignée massive. Ces examens confirment en outre l'idée que les épées nordiques à poignée massive et les épées à poignée octogonale du sud de l'Europe centrale furent fabriquées par des artisans imprégnés de traditions distinctes. Il faut remarquer que certaines épées nordiques présentent quelques caractéristiques propres aux techniques du coulage du bronze et surtout de l'emmanchement de l'Allemagne du Sud, révélant ainsi des liens complexes et un transfert technologique sélectif entre les deux traditions artisanales. On a également pu établir que les traditions artisanales des poignards à manche massif du Bronze ancien perdurent à travers la technique de fabrication des épées à poignée massive du Bronze moyen. Une production dans plusieurs petits ateliers peut être envisagée pour les épées à poignée octogonale. Vu la faible quantité de données, il fut impossible de vérifier selon des critères techniques les groupes d'ateliers des épées nordiques à poignée massive, postulés déjà depuis longtemps. La distribution des épées à poignée octogonale dans le nord peut s'expliquer par l'importation d'exemplaires décorés à la façon allemande méridionale, comme par celle d'épées nues, qui furent alors décorées par les artisans nordiques locaux. Des contacts et influences réciproques accompagnèrent ces échanges. Outre leur fonction première de servir d'arme, les épées devaient certainement revêtir une signification sociale et symbolique. In a project funded by the German state of Lower Saxony, macro- and microscopic analyses, X-ray examinations, 3D computed tomography and metal analyses (trace element analyses and lead isotope analyses) were carried out on Early Bronze swords from Lower Saxony. The evaluation provides some new insights, including the discovery of an exceptional ornamental technique involving inserted bolts on the pommels of two Nordic full-hilted swords. Furthermore, the investigations confirm the theory that Nordic full-hilted swords and Southern Central European octagonal hilted swords were produced by craftsmen of different traditions. Remarkably, Nordic full-hilted swords bear evidence of a limited adaptation of casting and mounting techniques of Southern Central European origin. This sheds light on complex relations and a selective technology transfer between these two different craft traditions. In addition, it can be shown that some craft traditions of the Early Bronze metal-hilted daggers live on in some full-hilted swords of later times. The octagonal hilted swords were probably produced in several small workshops. The long-postulated workshop trading areas of Nordic full-hilted swords could unfortunately not be reassessed according to technological criteria because of the scarce data available. The distribution of octagonal hilted swords in the north may be explained by the import of swords with „southern“ ornamentation and other non-decorated swords which were finished in the north. This led to reciprocal contact and influences. Besides their primary function as a weapon, the swords would certainly also have carried social and symbolic meanings.

In der antiken griechischen Welt implizieren insbesondere gemusterte Stoffe zwischenmenschliche Bindungen verschiedenster Art. Außer regional variierenden Sitten, die Toten, ihre Beigaben oder Leichenbrandbehältnisse durch Textilien zu verhüllen, können diverse Schmuckgehänge aus Frauen- und Männerbestattungen als verkleinerte und z.T. stilisierte Darstellungen von Webstühlen gesehen werden. Ausgehend von einem Gehänge aus Frög, das in seinen Bestandteilen mit einem griechischen Vasenbild, das die Entstehung von Stoff am Gewichtswebstuhl zeigt, übereinstimmt, wird augenfällig, dass trianguläre Klapperbleche in diesem Zusammenhang eigentlich Webgewichte meinen. Folglich geben vergleichbare diverse italische Fibelgehänge und bisher ungedeutete Anhänger prominenter Fundstellen symbolisch Zeugnis für ‚das Weben‘. Alt überlieferte, religiöse Zeichen wie Kreisaugen oder Vogelprotomen (Vogelbarke) sind regelhaft ihre Begleiter. Bestimmte eisenzeitliche Metallgürtel mit Klapperblechen sind daher in eine überregionale und zeitübergreifende religiös bestimmte Traditionskette einzugliedern. Dans le monde grec antique, les étoffes décorées, surtout, symbolisent les relations humaines les plus diverses. Outre la coutume, qui varie selon les régions, de revêtir d'étoffes les défunts, leurs offrandes ou les urnes, différents pendentifs provenant de sépultures féminines ou masculines peuvent être considérés comme des représentations miniaturisées et partiellement stylisées de métiers à tisser. La comparaison des éléments d'une plaque à pendeloques de Frög avec la représentation du tissage d'une étoffe sur un vase grec révèle de manière frappante que les pendeloques triangulaires correspondent ici à des poids de tisserand. Ainsi, diverses pendeloques de fibules italiques comparables et des pendentifs non identifiés jusqu'ici, provenant de sites importants, sont des témoins symboliques du „tissage“. Ces pièces sont régulièrement décorées de symboles religieux transmis depuis des générations, tels que les cercles concentriques ou les protomes aviformes. Certaines ceintures en métal à pendeloques en tôle de l'âge du Fer doivent donc être insérées dans une longue tradition marquée par les croyances et qui dépasse le niveau régional. In the Ancient Greek world, textiles, especially decorative ones, were symbols for different kinds of human connections. The regional variance in customs of using textiles for covering and wrapping the dead, their urns and grave goods, is described in detail for Hallstatt, Frög, Bologna and Verucchio. A pendant from Frög corresponds in large part to pictures on Greek vessels that show textiles being made at a loom. By analogy, specific other pendants from male and female graves can therefore be interpreted as pictures of abstract miniature looms. All these objects can be considered as symbols for weaving (and human connections). Religious signs, such as concentric rings or birds, are usually marked on them. Moreover, some ornamented metal belts may have their origin in textile belts. Iron Age belts with pendants thus stand in a Europe- wide and age-old religious tradition. Nel mondo greco antico, le stoffe, soprattutto quelle decorate, implicano vincoli interpersonali di diverso tipo. A parte i riti, differenti da regione a regione, di oli nella stoffa, i diversi monili provenienti da sepolture maschili e femminili possono essere interpretati come rappresentazioni miniaturizzate, ed in parte anche stilizzate, di telseppellire i defunti, gli oggetti del corredo funebre, oppure le urne funerarie avvolgendai. Prendendo spunto da un monile da Frög, che nella sua composizione puó essere accostato alla pittura vascolare greca e che mostra la genesi della tessitura di stoffa su telaio, si può affermare che i monili italici rendono testimonianza del loro uso simbolico per la tessitura. Sono costantemente accompagnati da simboli religiosi come ornamenti a forma di cerchio oppure protomi di uccelli. Essi provengono da sepolcri femminili della prima metá del VI secolo. Cinture di metallo dell'etá del ferro hanno probabilmente anch'esse modelli provenienti da ornamenti tessili, mentre quelli con monili sono da collocare in una concatenazione di tradizioni religiose che travalicano il tempo e la collocazione regionale.

1936 veröffentlichte Professor A. M. Tallgren, Helsinki, den Aufsatz „Sur la méthode de l'archeólogie préhistorique“, in dem er für die Archäologie neue Aufgaben skizzierte. Als solche sah er besonders wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellungen und solche zur Geschichte der Religion an. Deutlich kritisierte er in diesem Artikel den politischen Missbrauch der Archäologie in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion, was zu einer heftigen Gegenreaktion auf Seiten der deutschen Forschung führte. Die Antworten erwiesen sich dabei als von der jeweiligen persönlichen Haltung gegenüber der damaligen politischen und wissenschaftlichen Situation beeinflußt. Aufgrund der so entstandenen Diskussion milderte Tallgren seine Kritik in einem 1937 auf Englisch erschienen Beitrag etwas ab. Er selbst vertrat nach seinem Studium für eine kurze Zeit die von ethnischen Fragestellungen dominierten Lehren nationalistischer Archäologien des 19. Jahrhunderts, hatte diese aber bald als Sackgassen der Forschung erkannt, und daraus für seine Forschungen und Publikationen wie in diesem Beitrag dargelegt, weit reichende Schlüsse gezogen. Politisch war Tallgren seit der Jugendzeit liberal eingestellt und vom angelsächsischen System überzeugt. A. M. Tallgren, professeur à Helsinki, publia en 1936 l'essai intitulé „Sur la méthode de l'archéologie préhistorique“, dans lequel il esquissait les nouvelles tâches de l'archéologie. Parmi celles-ci, il releva particulièrement les questions touchant à l'histoire économique et politique, et celles relatives à l'histoire religieuse. Il critiqua clairement la manipulation politique de l'archéologie en Allemagne et en Union Soviétique, s'attirant ainsi les foudres des chercheurs allemands. Les réactions se révélèrent influencées par la position personnelle de chacun face à la situation politique et scientifique de l'époque. La discussion en cours amena Tallgren à adoucir sa critique dans un article paru en anglais en 1937. Après ses études, il avait luimême partagé un certain temps les théories dominées par les questions ethniques des archéologies nationalistes du 19 e siècle, mais reconnut bientôt qu'elles n'étaient que des impasses de la recherche. Il en tira alors des conséquences importantes pour ses recherches et ses publications. Tallgren adopta une attitude libérale déjà dans sa jeunesse et était convaincu du système anglo-saxon. In 1936, Professor A. M. Tallgren of Helsinki published the article „Sur la méthode de l'archeólogie préhistorique“, in which he proposed new lines of enquiry for archaeology. These included, in particular, economic and socio-historical investigations and those pertaining to the history of religion. He criticised in no uncertain terms the political misuse of archaeology in Germany and in the Soviet Union, which led to vigorous counterarguments from German researchers. The answers were informed by the respective personal attitude towards the political and academic situation of the time. On the basis of this debate, Tallgren softened his criticism slightly in an English-language article which appeared in 1937. Tallgren himself, for a short time after his studies, was a proponent of the nationalist archaeologies of the 19 th century, which were dominated by ethnic issues. However, he quickly realised that they were blind alleys and drew far-reaching consequences for his own research and publications, as this article describes. Tallgren held liberal political views since his youth and was convinced of the Anglo-Saxon system.
