Der vorliegende Beitrag behandelt ein bislang unpubliziertes Schwert aus der im Museum Tokat registrierten Necdet Dilek Kollektion, das trotz seines fehlenden Fundkontextes eine eingehendere Betrachtung verdient. Das Schwert gehört zu einem äußerst seltenen Typus flacher Vollgriffschwerter, die aus gesichertem Zusammenhang bislang nur als Bestandteil eines in dem Übergang vom 4. in das 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. datierten Verwahrfundes von Arslantepe, Malatya, Osttürkei bekannt sind. Beschädigungen an der Klinge unseres Schwertes deuten darauf hin, dass diese Hiebwaffe entgegen bisheriger Überzeugung tatsächlich im Kampf verwendet wurde, andererseits jedoch ebenso als frühmetallzeitliches Macht- und Prestigesymbol gedient hat. Die Ergebnisse einer zerstörungsfreien Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse sprechen für eine Verortung des Schwertes in der heutigen Region Malatya (Osttürkei). Cet article présente une épée, qui n'a pas été publiée jusqu'ici et qui fait partie de la collection Necdet Dilek enregistrée au musée de Tokat. Malgré l'absence de contexte, cette pièce mérite un examen plus approfondi. Elle appartient au type rarissime des épées plates à poignée massive dont le seul contexte sûr est un dépôt d'Arslantepe (Malatya, Turquie orientale) daté de la transition 4 e / 3 e millénaire av. J.-C. Les dommages constatés sur la lame font penser que cette arme de taille fut bien utilisée dans des combats, contrairement à l'opinion admise, tout en servant de symbole de pouvoir et de prestige au début l'ère du métal. Les résultats d'une analyse de la fluorescence X, qui n'a laissé aucune trace sur l'objet, plaident pour une origine de l'épée située dans la même contrée – et le même horizon – que celle des épées d'Arslantepe, c'est-à-dire la région actuelle de Malatya (Turquie orientale). This article presents a previously unpublished sword from the Necdet Dilek collection of the Tokat Museum, Turkey, which has never been properly acknowledged as the outstanding item that it actually is. The sword is a very rare type of double-edged metal baton, and is known so far exclusively from the site of Arslantepe, Malatya, Eastern Turkey, from a cache of items including typologically identical blades, dated to the latest 4th/earliest 3rd millennium BCE. It is argued that the new sword was indeed used in combat (a function that was previously denied), but also was a distinctive item to display power and prestige. The results of the non-destructive archaeometrical analysis, carried out with a portable XRF device, support our suspicion that the new ‚Arslantepe-type‘ sword originates from the same region and cultural horizon as the Arslantepe swords, that is, modern Malatya (Eastern Turkey).

Untersuchungen zu Gebäuden mit möglicher kultischer Funktion aus Gebieten, aus denen keine Schrift und nur wenige bildliche Darstellungen bekannt sind, stellen eine der schwierigsten Aufgaben der prähistorischen Archäologie dar. Die Spätbronzezeit ist in der nordpontischen Steppe eine Epoche großer Veränderungen: Es ist die Zeit der Expansion sesshafter Besiedlung, in der ca. 60 % der Wohnbauten mindestens teilweise aus Stein errichtet wurden. Obwohl eine kultische Funktion im Fall einiger Konstruktionen schon vorgeschlagen wurde, fand dieses Thema noch nie eine tiefergreifende Behandlung. Eine der bekanntesten spätbronzezeitlichen Fundstellen im Nordpontikum ist Voronovka 2. Sie liegt etwas östlich von Odessa, am Ufer der Bucht Adžalskoj Liman. Der Ort besteht aus einigen meist nur geringfügig untersuchten Strukturen aus Stein, darunter auch mehrere zol'nik (früher als ‚Aschehügel‘ ins Deutsche übersetzt) und eine vollständig freigelegte mehrräumige Anlage aus Stein. Diese Anlage gliedert sich in drei Hauptteile, der zentrale Block steht im Fokus des vorliegenden Beitrags. Einige besondere Merkmale seines architektonischen Plans, wie die Orientierung, die Symmetrie, welche nach einem bestimmten Muster verzerrt ist, die Anwesenheit enger und gebogener Korridore, zahlreicher Zellen und Nischen sowie auch spezieller Funde wie Stelen, verzierter Platten, Astragale oder Steingefäße, suggerieren eine nicht profane Funktion dieses Teils der Anlage. Die endgültige Interpretation wurde hier in Anlehnung an Colin Renfrews „archaeology of cult“ durchgeführt. Zu der Art der in Voronovka durchgeführten kultischen Handlungen lässt sich nur wenig sagen; die verzerrte Symmetrie und eventuell auch die Verteilung der Funde können jedoch darauf hinweisen, dass die gesamte Anlage ein dualistisches Konzept widerspiegelt. Kein anderes bekanntes Gebäude der nordpontischen Steppe weist einen dermaßen raffinierten Bebauungsplan auf wie Voronovka 2. Einige Elemente, wie z.B. die symmetrische Anordnung der Räume, findet man jedoch in wenigen anderen spätbronzezeitlichen Fundstellen (Zmeevka 1, Chortica- Gannovka, Dikij Sad). Außerdem könnten einige zol'nik eine „Altar-ähnliche“ Funktion gehabt haben. Besonders im Fall der mit einer Steinpflasterung bedeckten zol'nik in Voronovka 2 liegt die Interpretation als Kultstätte sehr nahe. Die Entwicklung ‚der durch Menschen gestalteten kultischen Umwelt‘ in der nordpontischen Spätbronzezeit verläuft offensichtlich parallel mit den sozialen, mentalen und vermutlich auch ideologischen Veränderungen, die zusammen mit der zunehmenden Sesshaftigkeit stattfanden. L'étude de bâtiments susceptibles d'avoir joué un rôle cultuel dans des régions dénuées de toute écriture, où seules quelques représentations imagées sont connues, est une des tâches les plus ardues de l'archéologie préhistorique. Le Bronze final est une époque de grands changements dans les steppes nord-pontiques: La colonisation sédentaire était en pleine expansion et env. 60 % des habitations étaient construites en dur, au moins partiellement. Bien qu'une fonction cultuelle eût été avancée pour certaines constructions, ce thème n'a encore jamais été abordé de manière plus approfondie. Un des sites les plus connus du Bronze final est Voronovka 2. Ce site se trouve à l'est d'Odessa, sur la rive de la baie d'Adžalskoj Liman, et se compose de quelques structures en pierre, en général peu étudiées, dont quelques zol'nik (traduits autrefois en allemand par „Aschehügel = tertre de cendres“), et d'un complexe en pierre de plusieurs pièces entièrement fouillé. Ce complexe comprend trois parties principales, dont le bloc central fait l'objet de cet article. Certaines caractéristiques de son plan architectural – orientation, symétrie déformée selon un schéma précis, présence de corridors étroits et courbes ainsi que de nombreuses cellules et niches – et la présence d'objets particuliers tels que stèles, dalles décorées, astragales ou vases en pierre suggèrent une fonction cultuelle pour cette partie du complexe. L'„archaeology of cult“ de Colin Renfrew a servi ici de base à l'interprétation finale. On ne peut dire grand-chose sur les rites cultuels pratiqués à Voronovka. La symétrie déformée et, éventuellement, la répartition des objets indiqueraient une conception dualiste du complexe. Aucune autre construction connue des steppes nord-pontiques ne présente un plan aussi élaboré que Voronovka 2. On retrouve cependant certains éléments, comme par exemple la disposition symétrique des pièces, sur quelques autres sites du Bronze final (Zmeevka 1, Chortica-Gannovka, Dikij Sad). Et puis, certains zol'nik ont peut-être eu une fonction similaire à celle des „autels“. Concernant le zol'nik de Voronovka 2, la présence d'un pavage permet d'y voir un lieu de culte. Le développement de l'„environnement cultuel architectural“ semble accompagner les changement sociaux, mentaux et, probablement, idéologiques liés à la sédentarité croissante. One of the most difficult tasks in prehistoric archaeology lies in the investigation of buildings serving a possibly ritual function in areas with no known written sources and only few pictorial representations. The Late Bronze Age in the North Pontic steppe was an era of great change: It was the time when sedantism expanded rapidly, with about 60 % of residential structures being built at least partly of stone. Although a cult function for some of these structures has been proposed in the past, this topic has never been explored in depth. One of the best known Late Bronze Age sites in the North Pontic region is Voronovka 2. It lies to the east of Odessa, on the banks of the Adžalskoj Liman bay. The site has revealed stone structures, most of which have not undergone detailed examination; these include several ‚zol-niki‘ and a completely excavated stone complex comprising multiple rooms. This complex has three main parts, and the central block is the focus of this article. A few special features of its architectonic design, such as orientation, symmetry (which follows a distorted pattern), the presence of narrow and curved corridors, numerous cells and niches as well as special finds, like stelae, decorated slabs, astragali or stone vessels, suggest a ritual function of this part of the complex. The interpretation presented here follows Colin Renfrews's ‚archaeology of cult.‘ Very little can be said about the type of rituals that were performed in Voronovka: the distorted symmetry and possibly also the distribution of the finds might indicate that the entire complex reflects a concept of duality. No other known building of the North Pontic steppe has such a sophisticated structural plan as Voronovka 2. However, some elements, such as the symmetrical arrangement of the rooms, may be found in a few other Late Bronze sites (Zmeevka 1, Chortica-Gannovka, Dikij Sad). In addition, some zol'niki might have had an ‚altar-like‘ function. In particular, the zol'nik in Voronovka 2 which is covered with stone paving is strongly suggestive of a ritual site. The development of ‚cult buildings‘ in the Late Bronze Age of the North Pontic region apparently runs parallel with the social, mental and possibly also ideological changes that accompanied the rise of sedentism.

Der Beitrag bietet zunächst einen Überblick zu den Ergebnissen der Ausgrabungen des Çukuriçi Höyük, eines küstennahen Tells an der mittleren Ägäisküste in Westanatolien. Der Fundort im Mündungsgebiet des Küçük Menderes liegt in einer topographisch günstigen Siedlungskammer, aus der bislang v.a. Oberflächenfunde aus prähistorischen Perioden bekannt sind, die anhand der Grabungsergebnisse diskutiert und neu bewertet werden. Der weitere Fokus liegt auf den jüngsten Siedlungen, die anhand komparativ-stratigraphischer Vergleiche und einer 14C-Sequenz in die FBZ 1 zwischen 2900–2750 calBC datieren. Die im Kontext von architektonischen Einheiten diskutierten Befunde dieser Periode werden einer ersten archäologischen Raumanalyse unterzogen, in der verschiedene Tätigkeiten diskutiert werden. Daraus ergibt sich für das vermutlich zentrale Areal des Tells ein Gesamtbild aus mehreren Metallgießerwerkstätten in einem Kontext mit Wohnbauten auf relativ engem Raum. Anhand der Nutzung von Obsidian und spezifischer Metalllegierungen werden unterschiedliche Austauschsysteme in einem weiteren geographischen Umfeld herausgearbeitet. Die Präsentation der Pflanzenfunde zeigt deutliche Unterschiede im Spektrum zwischen dem Spätchalkolithikum und der FBZ 1. In der zoologischen Untersuchung werden die Aspekte der Nutztierwirtschaft und Jagd sowie dem Meer als Nahrungsressource im Vergleich zur Subsistenz anderer Siedlungen in Anatolien und der Ägäis diskutiert. Cet article présente tout d'abord un aperçu des résultats des fouilles de Çukuriçi Höyük, un tell situé dans la partie centrale de la côte égéenne, en Anatolie occidentale. Le site se situe non loin de l'embouchure du Küçük Menderes, dans une zone d'habitat favorable par sa topographie. On ne connaissait jusqu'ici que des trouvailles de périodes préhistoriques récoltées en surface qui sont examinées et réévaluées maintenant sur la base des résultats obtenus avec les fouilles archéologiques. L'intérêt se porte également sur les habitats les plus récents qui sont datés du Bronze ancien I (2900–2750 cal BC) par des comparaisons stratigraphiques et une séquence 14C. Les contextes de cette période, considérés à partir d'unités architecturales, sont soumis à une analyse spatiale qui examine différentes activités. Il en ressort, pour la zone probablement centrale du tell, un paysage composé de plusieurs fonderies et d'habitations groupées sur un espace relativement restreint. L'utilisation de l'obsidienne et de différents alliages permet de dégager différents systèmes d'échanges dans un cadre géographique plus large. L'éventail des restes végétaux affiche des différences très nettes entre le Chalcolithique tardif et le Bronze ancien I. L'analyse zoologique discute les aspects de la chasse et de l'économie basée sur les animaux domestiques, ainsi que de la mer en tant que source alimentaire, face à l'économie de subsistance d'autres habitats en Anatolie et en mer Egée. The article presents firstly an overview of the excavation results from Çukuriçi Höyük, a tell on the mid-Aegean coastline in Western Anatolia. The site at the mouth of the Küçük Menderes lies in a topographically favourable settlement chamber from which mostly surface finds from prehistoric periods have been known until now; these will be discussed and re-evaluated in light of the excavation results. The article also focuses on the latest settlements, which comparative stratigraphy and a 14C sequence date to the EBA 1 between 2900 and 2750 calBC. The finds of this period, which are considered in the context of architectonic units, are subjected to an initial archaeological spatial analysis in which various activities are discussed. The result is an overall picture of the presumably central area of the tell, consisting of several metallurgy workshops in close proximity to residential structures. The use of obsidian and specific metal alloys suggests different exchange systems within a broader geographic region. The presentation of plant remains shows clear differences in the spectrum between the Late Chalcolithic and the EBA 1. The zoological analysis explores aspects of animal husbandry and hunting as well as the sea as a food source in comparison with the subsistence farming of other settlements in Anatolia and the Aegean.

Die Feinkeramik der mittelbronzezeitlichen Wietenberg-Kultur in Siebenbürgen ist gekennzeichnet durch Kompositionen aus gleichförmigen, sich wiederholenden ‚spiraloiden‘ oder ‚mäandroiden‘ Motiven. Diese pauschal als „Spiralzier“ bezeichneten Muster wurden oft mit Einflüssen aus dem mykenischen Raum in Verbindung gebracht. Ausgehend von einer detaillierten Untersuchung der Keramikzier der Wietenberg-Kultur wird nachgewiesen, dass es sich nicht im eigentlichen Sinne um Spiralzier, sondern gereihte Hakenmuster handelt, die sich möglicherweise als Abstraktion zoomorpher Motive erklären lassen. Ein Vergleich mit der echten Spiralzier des mykenischen Kulturraumes stützt die These zur grundlegenden Unterschiedlichkeit der Zierweisen weiter, die Keramikverzierungen der Wietenberg-Kultur sind damit unabhängig von südlichen Vorbildern zu sehen. Dies bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass keine Kontakte zwischen der Wietenberg-Kultur und dem mykenischen Griechenland bestanden hätten. Nur äußern sich diese lediglich auf der Ebene von Prestigeobjekten wie „mykenischen“ Schwertern, wellenbandverzierten Beinobjekten und den im Hajdúsámson-Apa-Stil verzierten Bronzen, die jedoch auf eine kleine soziale Elite beschränkt und zudem weit über den Raum der Wietenberg-Kultur hinaus verbreitet waren. La céramique à pâte fine de la culture de Wietenberg en Transylvanie est caractérisée par des compositions de motifs „spiraloïdes“ ou „méandriformes“, réguliers et répétés. On a souvent mis ces motifs, désignés en bloc comme „décor spiralé“, en relation avec des influences du monde mycénien. Partant d'une étude détaillée du décor de la poterie Wietenberg, on a pu démontrer qu'il ne s'agit pas proprement d'un décor spiralé, mais de rangées de crochets qui s'expliqueraient peut-être comme abstraction de motifs zoomorphes. Une comparaison avec le vrai décor spiralé du monde mycénien soutient la thèse d'une différence fondamentale entre les deux modes de décoration. Ainsi, les décors de la culture de Wietenberg doivent être considérés comme indépendants des modèles méridionaux. Ceci ne signifie cependant pas qu'il n'y eût pas de contacts entre la culture de Wietenberg et la Grèce mycénienne. Ils ne se manifestent cependant qu'à travers des objets de prestige tels que les épées „mycéniennes“, les objets en os décorés de bandes ondulées et les bronzes décorés dans le style de Hajdúsámson-Apa, tous limités à une petite élite sociale et, de plus, répartis bien au-delà du territoire de la culture de Wietenberg. The fine wares of the Wietenberg Culture in Transylvania during the Middle Bronze Age are characterised by compositions of uniform, repetitive ‚spiraloid‘ or ‚meandroid‘ motifs. These patterns – referred to collectively as ‚spiral ornamentation‘ – were often associated with the Mycenaean region. A detailed examination of the ceramic decoration of the Wietenberg Culture reveals that it is not actually spiral ornamentation, but rather rows of hook patterns, which may be abstract zoomorphic motifs. A comparison with the genuine spiral ornamentation of the Mycenaean Culture further supports the thesis of there being a fundamental difference in the type of ornamentation. The pottery ornamentation of the Wietenberg Culture is thus independent of southern prototypes. However, this does not mean that there was no contact between the Wietenberg Culture and Mycenaean Greece. But this contact remained at the level of prestige objects such as ‚Mycenaean‘ swords, bone objects with wave motifs and the bronzes decorated in Hajdúsámson-Apa style, which were limited to a small social elite and were furthermore distributed far beyond the Wietenberg Culture.

Der Beitrag behandelt die Schwertgräber aus dem Gräberfeld von Zuchering-Ost (Stadt Ingolstadt), die sich alle in den Beginn der Belegung dieses Bestattungsplatzes (Phase Bz D) datieren lassen. Ein Teil der Leichenbrände (Grab 1–302) wurde in den 1990er Jahren anthropologisch ausgewertet. Mit Ausnahme von Grab 144 waren bei allen Gräbern mit Schwertbeigabe Hinweise auf jeweils zwei Personen (Mann und Kind) festgestellt worden. Aufgrund der Verdachtsdiagnose „Schwertgrab = Mehrfachbestattung“ wurden kürzlich im Zuge der anthropologischen Auswertung der fehlenden Bz D Gräber (38 Befunde) die Gräber mit Schwertbeigabe aus der Leichenbrandserie (Grab 306–560) im Rahmen des Dissertationsvorhabens „Mehrfachbestattungen der Spätbronze- und vorrömischen Eisenzeit“ anthropologisch untersucht. Während die Kombination von Mann und Kind nicht bestätigt werden konnte, ließen sich immer Hinweise auf mehr als eine bestattete Person feststellen, wobei in keinem Fall alle Individuen derselben Altersklasse angehörten. Eine Möglichkeit, das Zustandekommen dieser Befunde zu erklären, wäre, dass aufgrund von bestimmten Ereignissen (Seuchen, Kriege) mehrere Individuen, ungeachtet ob gleichzeitig oder sukzessive, verbrannt werden mussten und schließlich in ein Grab gelangten. Der Beitrag diskutiert neben dieser These auch andere Optionen der Interpretation. Cet article traite des tombes à épée de la nécropole de Zuchering-Ost (Stadt Ingolstadt) qui datent toutes du début de l'occupation de cette nécropole (phase Bronze D). Une partie des incinérations (tombes 1–302) a été soumise à une étude anthropologique dans les années 1990. A part la tombe 144, toutes les tombes contenant une épée indiquaient la présence de deux personnes (homme et enfant). Vu le diagnostic de suspicion „tombe à épée = sépulture collective“, les tombes dotées d'une épée de la série d'incinérations (tombes 306–560) furent soumises récemment, au cours de l'étude anthropologique des tombes manquantes du Bronze D (38 contextes), à un examen anthropologique dans le cadre du projet de doctorat „Sépultures multiple du Bronze final et de l'âge du Fer préromain“. L'association homme/enfant n'a pu être confirmée, mais des indices de la présence de plus d'une personne ont pu être observés chaque fois, les individus n'appartenant pas tous à la même classe d'âge. Ces contextes pourraient s'expliquer par le fait que plusieurs individus ont dû être incinérés, puis déposés dans une tombe (ensemble ou successivement) à la suite de certains événements (épidémies, guerres). D'autres interprétations sont encore discutées dans cet article. The article focuses on the sword burials in the Zuchering-Ost cemetery (town of Ingolstadt), which all date to the beginning of the occupation of this burial place (phase Bz D). One part of the cremations (grave 1–302) underwent anthropological analysis in the 1990s. With the exception of grave 144, all graves with sword goods revealed evidence of two people (man and child), respectively. On the basis of this ‚sword grave = multiple burial‘ thesis, the graves with sword goods from the cremation series (graves 306–560) were recently subjected to anthropological analysis as part of the anthropological evaluation of the missing Bz D graves (38 finds) and the doctoral thesis ‚Multiple burials of the Late Bronze and Pre- Roman Iron Age‘. While it was not possible to confirm the combination of man and child, there were always indications of remains from more than one person, and in no case were the individuals of the same age. One possible explanation of these finds is that, owing to certain events (epidemics, wars), several individuals – either simultaneously or successively – had to be cremated and they ultimately ended up in the same grave. The article discusses other possible interpretations as well.

Der Artikel untersucht den Wandel der Herrschafts- und Siedlungsstrukturen im mittelalterlichen Niederschlesien (9.–14. Jahrhundert) anhand der Erforschung eines Siedlungskleinraums bei Köben an der Oder (Chobienia, pow. Lublin). An diesem Ort bilden ein frühmittelalterlicher Burgwall („Schwedenschanze“, zweite Hälfte des 9. Jahrhunderts), eine spätmittelalterliche Burg, eine Stadt und ein spätslawischer Siedlungskomplex (10.–13. Jahrhundert) mit einer Kirche, die den eigenartigen Namen „Dom“ trägt, eine interessante Konzentration von Orten mit militärischen, herrschaftlichen und wirtschaftlich herausragenden Funktionen aus unterschiedlichen Perioden. Ihre archäologische und historische Erforschung macht die Veränderungen in Schlesien von der Stammes- über die Piastenzeit bis in das späte Mittelalter nachvollziehbar. Ein scharfer Bruch in der Entwicklung kann von der Stammes- zur Piastenzeit ausgemacht werden, die weiteren Transformationen erscheinen zwar drastisch, aber eher sukzessive. Zugleich werden Wandlungen in den kulturellen Kontakten Niederschlesiens deutlich: Anfangs bestehen enge Beziehungen nach Böhmen und Mähren, später ins piastische Polen und seit dem 12. Jahrhundert wird der Einfluss des Deutschen Reiches immer stärker. Cet article examine la transformation des structures seigneuriales et de l'habitat dans la basse Silésie moyenâgeuse (9 e –14 e siècle) en se basant sur l'étude d'un petit territoire situé près de Köben sur l'Oder (Chobienia, pow. Lublin). Une place forte du début du Moyen-Age („Schwedenschanze“, deuxième moitié du 9 e siècle), un château fort de la fin du Moyen-Age, une ville ainsi qu'un ensemble d'habitats de la fin de l'époque slave (10 e –13 e siècle), avec une église portant singulièrement le nom de „Dom“, forment une concentration intéressante de localités appartenant à différentes époques et revêtant d'importantes fonctions militaires, seigneuriales et économiques. L'étude archéologique et historique de ces sites permet de comprendre les mutations en Silésie depuis l'époque tribale, en passant par l'époque des Piast, jusqu'à la fin du Moyen- Age. Cette évolution affiche une césure nette entre l'époque tribale et celle des Piast, tandis que les mutations postérieures, certes radicales, apparaissent plutôt successivement. On constate également des changements dans les échanges culturels de la basse Silésie: Elle entretint des relations étroites tout d'abord avec la Bohème et la Moravie, puis avec les Piast de Pologne, mais, dès le 12 e siècle, l'influence de l'Empire germanique devint de plus en plus forte. The article explores the transformation of the power and settlement structures in medieval Lower Silesia (9th to 14th century) on the basis of an analysis of a small settlement near Köben an der Oder (Chobienia, pow. Lublin). This site – with its early medieval castle wall (‚Swedish entrenchment‘, second half of the 9th century), a late medieval castle, a city and a late Slavic settlement complex (10th to 13th century) including a church which has the unusual name ‚cathedral‘ – is an interesting concentration of places with economic, military or power-related functions from different periods. The archaeological and historical analyses of this site shed light on the changes that took place in Silesia – from the tribal era to the Piast dynasty up to the Late Middle Ages. A sharp break in the development can be discerned from the tribal era to the time of the Piast dynasty. The further transformations, while appearing drastic, are more successive in nature. At the same time, there were clear changes in the cultural contacts of Lower Silesia: at the beginning there were close ties to Bohemia and Moravia, later to Piast Poland, and then beginning in the 12th century the influence of the German Empire became increasingly stronger.
