About this journal
Mongolian Diaspora. Journal of Mongolian History and Culture is the only established, peer reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal in the world concerned with the history, politics, diplomacy, cultures, language, literature, tourism, arts, religions, and archaeology of the Eurasian regions which are home to a Mongolian diaspora. These primarily include Outer Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Russia (Buriat, Kalmyk), Kazakhstan (Tore), and Europe (Lapland). Also covered are China (Qinghai, Xinjiang), Afghanistan (Moghal), Iran & Pakistan (Hazara), and Turkey.
Originally, the term ‘Diaspora’ referred to Jews who left Palestine and lived scattered around the world, maintaining the norms and customs of Judaism. However, its meaning later expanded, now referring more broadly to a population (or their place of residence) who maintain their own norms and customs despite not residing in their homeland anymore.
The Mongols conquered most of the Eurasian continent during the reign of Genghis Khan, who founded the Mongolian Empire in the Middle Ages, and numerous Mongols were scattered and began inhabiting all parts of Eurasia at that time. Some of these diasporas are still in existence today. Even though they face diverse difficulties as immigrants in their current countries of residence, they strive to preserve the folklore and culture of their home country and maintain their Mongolian identity.
Mongolian Diaspora pursues a global, multi-disciplinary approach to research on the Mongolian diasporas. Furthermore, it aims to make a significant contribution to the maintenance of the national identity of the Mongolians living scattered around the world beyond Eurasia, and to the promotion of the unity of the Mongolians globally, thereby contributing to the establishment and development of the national identity of modern Mongolia.
Mongolian Diaspora is published by De Gruyter on behalf of the Eurasian-Mongolian Research Center at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul.
