We use the general theory developed in our article [Čap A., Melnick K., Essential Killing fields of parabolic geometries, Indiana Univ. Math. J. (in press)], in the setting of parabolic geometries to reprove known results on special infinitesimal automorphisms of projective and conformal geometries.

We discuss which semisimple locally symmetric spaces admit an AHS-structure invariant under local symmetries. We classify them for all types of AHS-structures and determine possible equivalence classes of such AHS-structures.

The category of foliations is considered. In this category morphisms are differentiable maps sending leaves of one foliation into leaves of the other foliation. We prove that the automorphism group of a foliation with transverse linear connection is an infinite-dimensional Lie group modeled on LF-spaces. This result extends the corresponding result of Macias-Virgós and Sanmartín Carbón for Riemannian foliations. In particular, our result is valid for Lorentzian and pseudo-Riemannian foliations.

We derive logarithmic asymptotics of probabilities of small deviations for iterated processes in the space of trajectories. We find conditions under which these asymptotics coincide with those of processes generating iterated processes. When these conditions fail the asymptotics are quite different.

We discuss the problem of stable conjugacy of finite subgroups of Cremona groups. We compute the stable birational invariant H 1(G, Pic(X)) for cyclic groups of prime order.

A primitive multiple curve is a Cohen-Macaulay irreducible projective curve Y that can be locally embedded in a smooth surface, and such that Y red is smooth. We study the deformations of Y to curves with smooth irreducible components, when the number of components is maximal (it is then the multiplicity n of Y). We are particularly interested in deformations to n disjoint smooth irreducible components, which are called fragmented deformations. We describe them completely. We give also a characterization of primitive multiple curves having a fragmented deformation.

We give explicit formulas for reducing the problem of determining whether a given 2-cocycle is a coboundary and if so finding a lifting 1-cochain to a system of norm equations.

The left distributive law is the law a· (b· c) = (a·b) · (a· c). Left distributive algebras have been classically used in the study of knots and braids, and more recently free left distributive algebras have been studied in connection with large cardinal axioms in set theory. We provide a survey of results on the free left distributive algebra on one generator, A, and a new, simplified proof of the existence of a normal form for terms in A. Topics included are: the confluence of A, the linearity of the iterated left division ordering <L of A, the connections of A to the braid groups, and an extension P of A obtained by freely adding a composition operation. This is followed by a simplified proof of the division algorithm for P, which produces a normal form for terms in A and is a powerful tool in the study of A.

Let G be a group and P G be the Boolean algebra of all subsets of G. A mapping Δ: P G → P G defined by Δ(A) = {g ∈ G: gA ∩ A is infinite} is called the combinatorial derivation. The mapping Δ can be considered as an analogue of the topological derivation d: P X→ P X, A ↦ A d, where X is a topological space and A d is the set of all limit points of A. We study the behaviour of subsets of G under action of Δ and its inverse mapping ∇. For example, we show that if G is infinite and I is an ideal in P G such that Δ(A) ∈ I and ∇(A) ⊆ I for each A ∈ I then I = P G.

A subgroup H of a group G is called ascendant-by-finite in G if there exists a subgroup K of H such that K is ascendant in G and the index of K in H is finite. It is proved that a locally finite group with every subgroup ascendant-by-finite is locally nilpotent-by-finite. As a consequence, it is shown that the Gruenberg radical has finite index in the whole group.

This paper extends some properties of the generalized complementary basic matrices, in particular, in a combinatorial direction. These include inheritance (such as for Alternating Sign Matrices), spectral, and sign pattern matrix (including sign nonsingularity) properties.

We show that a completely regular space Y is a p-space (a Čech-complete space, a locally compact space) if and only if given a dense subspace A of any topological space X and a continuous f: A → Y there are a p-embedded subset (resp. a G δ-subset, an open subset) M of X containing A and a quasicontinuous subcontinuous extension f*: M → Y of f continuous at every point of A. A result concerning a continuous extension to a residual set is also given.

We study the inverse problem of recovering Sturm-Liouville operators on the half-line with a Bessel-type singularity inside the interval from the given Weyl function. The corresponding uniqueness theorem is proved, a constructive procedure for the solution of the inverse problem is provided, also necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the inverse problem are obtained.

Positive solutions of the nonlinear second-order differential equation $(p(t)|x'|^{\alpha - 1} x')' + q(t)|x|^{\beta - 1} x = 0,\alpha > \beta > 0,$ are studied under the assumption that p, q are generalized regularly varying functions. An application of the theory of regular variation gives the possibility of obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of three possible types of intermediate solutions, together with the precise information about asymptotic behavior at infinity of all solutions belonging to each type of solution classes.

We obtain uniform asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville operators L t (q) with a potential q ∈ L 1[0,1] and t-periodic boundary conditions, t ∈ (−π, π]. Using these formulas, we find sufficient conditions on the potential q such that the number of spectral singularities in the spectrum of the Hill operator L(q) in L 2(−∞,∞) is finite. Then we prove that the operator L(q) has no spectral singularities at infinity and it is an asymptotically spectral operator provided that the potential q satisfies sufficient conditions.

For certain generalized Bernstein operators {L n} we show that there exist no i, j ∈ {1, 2, 3,…}, i < j, such that the functions e i(x) = x i and e j (x) = x j are preserved by L n for each n = 1, 2,… But there exist infinitely many e i such that e 0(x) = 1 and e j (x) = x j are its fixed points.
