We define open book structures with singular bindings. Starting with an extension of Milnor’s results on local fibrations for germs with nonisolated singularity, we find classes of genuine real analytic mappings which yield such open book structures.

Based on conjugate duality we construct several gap functions for general variational inequalities and equilibrium problems, in the formulation of which a so-called perturbation function is used. These functions are written with the help of the Fenchel-Moreau conjugate of the functions involved. In case we are working in the convex setting and a regularity condition is fulfilled, these functions become gap functions. The techniques used are the ones considered in [Altangerel L., Boţ R.I., Wanka G., On gap functions for equilibrium problems via Fenchel duality, Pac. J. Optim., 2006, 2(3), 667–678] and [Altangerel L., Boţ R.I., Wanka G., On the construction of gap functions for variational inequalities via conjugate duality, Asia-Pac. J. Oper. Res., 2007, 24(3), 353–371]. By particularizing the perturbation function we rediscover several gap functions from the literature. We also characterize the solutions of various variational inequalities and equilibrium problems by means of the properties of the convex subdifferential. In case no regularity condition is fulfilled, we deliver also necessary and sufficient sequential characterizations for these solutions. Several examples are illustrating the theoretical aspects.

Let X be an infinite-dimensional real reflexive Banach space such that X and its dual X* are locally uniformly convex. Suppose that T: X⊃D(T) → 2X* is a maximal monotone multi-valued operator and C: X⊃D(C) → X* is a generalized pseudomonotone quasibounded operator with L ⊂ D(C), where L is a dense subspace of X. Applying a recent degree theory of Kartsatos and Skrypnik, we establish the existence of an eigensolution to the nonlinear inclusion 0 ∈ T x + λ C x, with a regularization method by means of the duality operator. Moreover, possible branches of eigensolutions to the above inclusion are discussed. Furthermore, we give a surjectivity result about the operator λT + C when λ is not an eigenvalue for the pair (T, C), T being single-valued and densely defined.

For every metric space (X, d) and origin o ∈ X, we show the inequality I o(x, y) ≤ 2d o(x, y), where I o(x, y) = d(x, y)/d(x, o)d(y, o) is the metric space inversion semimetric, d o is a metric subordinate to I o, and x, y ∈ X \ {o} The constant 2 is best possible.

In this paper we introduce a connected topology T on the set ℕ of positive integers whose base consists of all arithmetic progressions connected in Golomb’s topology. It turns out that all arithmetic progressions which are connected in the topology T form a basis for Golomb’s topology. Further we examine connectedness of arithmetic progressions in the division topology T′ on ℕ which was defined by Rizza in 1993. Immediate consequences of these studies are results concerning local connectedness of the topological spaces (ℕ, T) and (ℕ, T′).

We give a complete classification of all pairs of cyclotomic polynomials whose zeros interlace on the unit circle, making explicit a result essentially contained in work of Beukers and Heckman. We show that each such pair corresponds to a single polynomial from a certain special class of integer polynomials, the 2-reciprocal discbionic polynomials. We also show that each such pair also corresponds (in four different ways) to a single Pisot polynomial from a certain restricted class, the cyclogenic Pisot polynomials. We investigate properties of this class of Pisot polynomials.

We obtain two equivalent conditions for m polynomials in n variables to form a p-basis of a ring of constants of some polynomial K-derivation, where K is a unique factorization domain of characteristic p > 0. One of these conditions involves Jacobians while the other some properties of factors. In the case m = n this extends the known theorem of Nousiainen, and we obtain a new formulation of the Jacobian conjecture in positive characteristic.

Let p be an odd prime and k an arbitrary field of characteristic not p. We determine the obstructions for the realizability as Galois groups over k of all groups of orders p 5 and p 6 that have an abelian quotient obtained by factoring out central subgroups of order p or p 2. These obstructions are decomposed as products of p-cyclic algebras, provided that k contains certain roots of unity.

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for various vertex-transitivity of Cayley graphs of the class of completely 0-simple semigroups and its several subclasses. Moreover, the question when the Cayley graphs of completely 0-simple semigroups are undirected is considered.

There is a circle of problems concerning the exponential generating function of harmonic numbers. The main results come from Cvijovic, Dattoli, Gosper and Srivastava. In this paper, we extend some of them. Namely, we give the exponential generating function of hyperharmonic numbers indexed by arithmetic progressions; in the sum several combinatorial numbers (like Stirling and Bell numbers) and the hypergeometric function appear.

In the first section of this paper, we prove an analogue of Stone’s Theorem for posets satisfying DCC by using semiprime ideals. We also prove the existence of prime ideals in atomic posets in which atoms are dually distributive. Further, it is proved that every maximal non-dense (non-principal) ideal of a 0-distributive poset (meet-semilattice) is prime. The second section focuses on the characterizations of (minimal) prime ideals in pseudocomplemented posets. The third section deals with the generalization of the classical theorem of Nachbin. In fact, we prove that a dually atomic pseudocomplemented, 1-distributive poset is complemented if and only if the poset of prime ideals is unordered. In the last section, we have characterized 0-distributive posets by means of prime ideals and minimal prime ideals.

The aim of this paper is to discuss one of the most interesting and unsolved problems of the real series theory: rearrangements that preserve sums of series. Certain hypothesis about combinatorial description of the corresponding permutations is presented and basic algebraic properties of the family $\mathfrak{S}_0 $, introduced by it, are investigated.

First a stability result of Prager-Schwaiger [Prager W., Schwaiger J., Stability of the multi-Jensen equation, Bull. Korean Math. Soc., 2008, 45(1), 133–142] is generalized by admitting more general domains of the involved function and by allowing the bound to be not constant. Next a result by Cieplinski [Cieplinski K., On multi-Jensen functions and Jensen difference, Bull. Korean Math. Soc., 2008, 45(4), 729–737] is discussed. Finally a characterization of the completeness of a normed space in terms of stability requirements for multi-Jensen functions is presented.

Cohen, Dahmen and DeVore designed in [Adaptive wavelet methods for elliptic operator equations: convergence rates, Math. Comp., 2001, 70(233), 27–75] and [Adaptive wavelet methods II¶beyond the elliptic case, Found. Comput. Math., 2002, 2(3), 203–245] a general concept for solving operator equations. Its essential steps are: transformation of the variational formulation into the well-conditioned infinite-dimensional l 2-problem, finding the convergent iteration process for the l 2-problem and finally using its finite dimensional approximation which works with an inexact right-hand side and approximate matrix-vector multiplication. In our contribution, we pay attention to approximate matrix-vector multiplication which is enabled by an off-diagonal decay of entries of the wavelet stiffness matrices. We propose a more efficient technique which better utilizes actual decay of matrix and vector entries and we also prove that this multiplication algorithm is asymptotically optimal in the sense that storage and number of floating point operations, needed to resolve the problem with desired accuracy, remain proportional to the problem size when the resolution of the discretization is refined.
