Insofar as the terrorists in the attacks of September 11, 2001 used global communication and transportation networks to carry out their plots, they illuminated the perilous side of a world now living more closely together. However, the violence with which they ripped through the hearts and minds of Americans and others around the world is a stark reminder that there are at least significant fissures in a global cultural fabric, if in fact such a fabric does exist.
