The multiple paradigms of pastoral theology reveal various models of education which again are linked to certain concepts of protestantism and christianity in general. This is reflected in the concept of the ‘Pfarrer’ (pastor). They change according to shifting educational theories and transforming images of the church. This connection may be illustrated in reference to the articles entitled ‘Pfarrer’ in the four editions of the «Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart». At the same time, important editorial shifts in the the production of the encylopedias are reconstructed.

The essay provides an empirical-descriptive and theoretical analysis of the German pastoral counsel for circus and carnival workers (CSS), which has so far been neglected by Practical Theology. For this purpose, data about typical counselling themes within the field are collected, consisting of expert-interviews with pastoral care professionals and written empiric material. The author traces those counselling situations’ connection to common systemic questions such as the relations of family, society and individual and stresses the theoretical output of systemic counselling concepts for the CSS. Consecutive case studies deliver additional details about the practical and theoretical importance of systemic and hypnosystemic concepts for this sector.

In the Middle Ages the religious media were transformed from haptic to visual representation. In the Elizabeth Church in Marburg the tangible access to the body of Saint Elizabeth was made impossible and substituted by holy images. The Elizabeth Church demonstrates this transformation of religious media. Therefore, I suggest to interpret church buildings as part of the history of media and their transformations.

This essay posits that theological reflection on a particular practice of remembering suffering – namely, the memory of the El Mozote massacre in El Salvador – reveals that hope in the memory of suffering is an integral component of Christian formation. There is something about the memory of suffering, in and of itself , which produces hope and can thus form Christians as a people of hope even in the face of tragedy. The practical theological argument for the memory of suffering as Christian formation in hope proceeds in three parts. First, it provides background on the El Mozote massacre and a thick description of the annual anniversary celebration which commemorates it. Second, it provides a practical theological proposal for why the memory of suffering in general and of El Mozote in particular is productive of hope and formative of Christians as a people of hope. Finally, it both proposes some lessons that Christians in the context of the Global North might learn from the memory of El Mozote, and suggests some possible directions for practices of Christian formation to take in order to more fully incorporate the memory of suffering into the lives and consciousness of the faithful. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel postuliert, dass theologische Reflexion über eine bestimmte Praxis der Erinnerung an Leiden – die Erinnerung an das Massaker von El Mozote in El Salvador – zeigt, dass Hoffnung in der Erinnerung an Leiden ein wesentlicher Teil christlicher Erziehung ist. Erinnerung an Leiden an und für sich bringt Hoffnung und kann deshalb sogar im Angesicht von Unglück Christen als hoffnungsvolle Menschen bilden. Das praktisch-theologische Argument für Erinnerung an Leiden als christliche Erziehung in Hoffnung vollzieht sich in drei Schritten. Zum ersten wird der Hintergrund des Massakers von El Mozote aufgezeichnet und eine dichte Beschreibung der jährlichen Gedächtnisfeier geboten. Zum zweiten wird ein praktisch-theologischer Vorschlag gemacht, warum Erinnerung an Leiden allgemein und an El Mozote im Besonderen Hoffnung hervorbringt und Christen als hoffnungsvolle Menschen bildet. Abschliessend werden sowohl Einsichten aufgezeigt für Christen im Globalen Norden als auch mögliche Anregungen für christliche Erziehung erläutert, um Erinnerung an Leiden stärker in das Leben und Bewusstsein der Gläubigen einzubinden.

One intriguing cultural phenomenon today is changes in language. While language has always evolved, there is an emerging linguistically based cultural wisdom that is worthy of exploration in theology. The Urban Dictionary contains thousands of entries; words and phrases perhaps unknown a decade or so ago. Some of these have crept into mainstream English, while others fall into a category that might be reckoned as “street wisdom.” Many new words have been born from technology, social networking and globalization, as words and wisdom cross cultures and are highly influential in the worldviews of young people. The Urban Dictionary website boasts that this is “the dictionary you wrote” and tells people to “define your world.” The implicit claim is that we are no longer bound by traditional language and meanings and that we can name reality for ourselves. Zusammenfassung Die Veränderung der Sprache ist heute ein faszinierendes kulturelles Phänomen. Obwohl sich die Sprache immer weiterentwickelt hat, zeichnet sich eine linguistisch fundierte kulturelle Weisheit ab, die es wert ist, in der Theologie untersucht zu werden. Das „Urban Dictionary“ enthält mehrere tausend Einträge, Wörter und Sätze, die vielleicht vor etwa einem Jahrzehnt noch unbekannt waren. Einige davon haben ihren Einzug in den allgemeinen englischen Sprachgebrauch gefunden, während andere in eine Kategorie fallen, die mehr zum „Alltagswissen“ gehört. Viele neue Wörter haben ihren Ursprung in der Technologie, in sozialen Netzwerken und der Globalsierung, da Wörter und Weisheiten interkulturell sind und einen großen Einfluss auf die Weltsicht von jungen Menschen haben. Die Internetseite des „Urban Dictionary“ verkündet stolz, dass es „das Wörterbuch, dass Sie verfasst haben“ sei und sagt Menschen „definieren Sie Ihre Welt.“ Die implizite Behauptung ist dabei, dass wir durch die traditionelle Sprache und ihre Bedeutung nicht mehr gebunden sind und dass wir die Realität selbst für uns bestimmen können.

This article looks onto the latest developments of the field of spirituality from an American-Catholic and an European-Protestant perspective. Both perspectives are commented upon to broaden the view. The conditions of the developments and the present level of research are described for both regions. Further themes are denoted. In this way the research is linked up and deepened. Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel betrachtet aus einer amerikanisch-katholischen und einer europäisch-protestantischen Perspektive die neuesten Entwicklungen im Bereich der Spiritualität. Beide Perspektiven werden nochmals auf ihren Ertrag hin kommentiert, um den Horizont zu erweitern. Für beide Regionen werden die Bedingungen der Entwicklungen und der gegenwärtige Stand der Forschung beschrieben. Weitere Themen für die Forschung werden benannt. Damit wird sie vernetzt und zugleich vertieft.

The research report provides information on areas of operation as well as new publications primarily in protestant and French-speaking Practical Theology. It characterizes three axes of understanding Practical Theology: as a theological hermeneutic, as a Theology of ecclesial practices and as a critical reflection on culture. Within the second chapter it emphasizes topics that are identified to embody new areas of work among Practical Theology particularly in France: The list includes the aspects of Missiology, Feminist Theology as well as arts and vision. In his final chapter, the author presents an overview on literature dealing with classical fields of practical theological research: Whereas homiletics, liturgy and church-theory are traditionally in the focus of Protestantism, catechetics up to now represent a domain of Catholic Practical Theology. Zusammenfassung Der Forschungsbericht informiert über Arbeitsgebiete und Neuerscheinungen primär in der evangelischen französischsprachigen Praktischen Theologie. In einem ersten Durchgang charakterisiert er drei Selbstverständnisse Praktischer Theologie: als hermeneutische Disziplin, als Theorie kirchlicher Praxis und als kritische Kulturtheorie. In einem zweiten Kapitel werden neun Themen benannt, die in jüngster Zeit als praktisch-theologisch relevant identifiziert und entfaltet wurden: der Bogen reicht von Mission über feministische Theologie bis zur Kunst. Im letzten Abschnitt sichtet der Autor die Literatur zu klassischen Feldern Praktischer Theologie: Während Homiletik/Liturgik und Kirchentheorie traditionell v. a. im Protestantismus Interesse finden, ist Katechetik bislang eine Domäne katholischer Praktischer Theologie.

In this paper, I will use the publication of a new book on what the authors term ‘theological action research’ to examine in depth the claim that practical theology ought to be regarded as a form of action research. Action research is founded on the indivisibility of value and action: a conviction that knowledge, and research, cannot be dispassionate and that values are themselves iterated in the process of their implementation in practice. It insists on the inductive and contextual nature of knowledge and assumes that knowledge comes from human experience (albeit interpreted and codified through rational enquiry and analysis), rather than proceeding deductively from revealed truth. Zusammenfassung Die Autorin nimmt die Neuerscheinung eines Buches über theologische Aktionsforschung zum Anlass, um die Behauptung zu untersuchen, dass praktische Theologie eine Form von Aktionsforschung sei. Aktionsforschung gründet sich auf die Unteilbarkeit von Werten und Handeln: eine Űberzeugung, dass Wissen und Forschung nicht unvoreingenommen sein können und dass Werte selbst sich bei Anwendung im Handeln wandeln. Aktionsforschung besteht auf dem induktiven und kontextuellen Wesen von Wissen und nimmt an, dass Wissen aus menschlicher Erfahrung entspringe, statt es deduktiv aus offenbarter Wahrheit abzuleiten. Praktische Theologen könnten eine Gemeinsamkeit mit Aktionsforschern in dem Bemühen um eine Forschung entdecken, die nicht nur das Verstehen einer Situation durch die Anwendung qualitativer Methoden anstrebt, sondern auch ihre Veränderung durch die Kultivierung theologisch verankerter praktischer Vernunft.
