Numerical analysis of thermo-hydraulic performance in double-twisted tube heat exchangers using Al₂O₃ nanofluid: part 1 effect of configurations tube

This computational study investigates the thermo-hydraulic performance of five distinct double-tube heat exchanger configurations with twisted geometries: Double Circular Twisted Tube (DCTTHE), Double Elliptical Twisted Tube (DETTHE), Double Triangle Twisted Tube (DTTTHE), and Double Twisted Square Tube (DTSTHE). To improve heat transfer efficiency in compact systems without excessively increasing hydraulic losses. It is hypothesized that simultaneous twisting of both inner and outer tubes can intensify secondary flow structures, thereby significantly enhancing thermal performance compared to other geometrical configurations. A three-dimensional finite volume model, employing the standard k - ε turbulence model and validated against established literature, was used to simulate turbulent flow (Reynolds number range: 5,000–30,000) with Al 2 O 3 -water nanofluid at a 4 % volume concentration and a constant twist ratio of 5. The analysis focused on key performance metrics, including heat transfer rate, effectiveness, Nusselt number, and pressure drop. Results demonstrate that the DTSTHE configuration, characterized by the concurrent twisting of both inner and outer tubes, generated the most intense secondary flow and vortex structures. This led to superior thermal performance, achieving the highest heat exchanger effectiveness and overall performance factor across the studied Reynolds number range. However, this thermal enhancement was universally accompanied by an increased pressure drop, with the DTTTHE geometry exhibiting the most significant hydraulic penalty. The study concludes that the DTSTHE providing substantial heat transfer augmentation while maintaining a manageable pressure drop compared to other twisted geometries.

Fabrication and characterization of industrial fly ash ceramic membranes for efficient removal of methylene blue dye

This study presents the development of a cost-effective ceramic membrane derived from waste inorganic fly ash for efficient dye removal from aqueous solutions, leveraging the synergistic properties of fly ash and a supporting substrate through a combination of chemical grafting. A wider particle size distribution of fly ash results in a denser membrane structure with reduced porosity. The membrane was fabricated using the uniaxial pressing technique, specifically through dry uniaxial compaction, and was analyzed using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Additionally, porosity and permeability tests were conducted using pure water. The particle size of fly ash significantly affects the properties of the ceramic membrane, including porosity, surface area, mechanical strength, and filtration efficiency. The membrane featured varying compositions and sintering temperatures ranging from 600 °C to 900 °C. The porosity of the membranes was found to be 31.31 %, with an average hydraulic pore radius of 0.311 µm, leading to an increase in pure water flux from 0.022 to 0.15 L/m 2 min bar within a transmembrane pressure range of 1–4 kg/cm 2 . The membrane surface displayed a negative charge within the pH range of 4–12, indicating that adsorption played a key role in removing the cationic dye. This work emphasizes the significant potential of these membranes for treating dye-containing aqueous solutions, considering factors such as transmembrane pressure, feed concentration, flux, and rejection. At a pressure of 1 kg/cm 2 , the highest dye removal efficiency is 99.86 % at a feed concentration of 20 mg/L.

Efficient and sustainable hydrogen generation is fundamental to the transition to a clean energy economy. Water dissociation is a key method for producing green hydrogen when powered by renewable energy sources. The substitution of cations such as strontium and cobalt in the lanthanum chromite crystal lattice induces structural modifications that increase oxygen vacancies, thereby modulating electronic conductivity and enhancing surface catalytic activity for water dissociation. Furthermore, it is possible to create materials sensitive to specific wavelengths; this tuning capability is essential in photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and optoelectronics. In this work, we investigate the modifications in the electronic and catalytic properties of lanthanum chromite induced by strontium and cobalt doping. To assess the material’s potential for hydrogen production using thermochemical water splitting, thermogravimetric analysis was conducted, yielding a hydrogen production capacity of 0.252 mmol/g. Analysis performed using reflectance spectroscopy showed that the band gap can be tuned within a range of 1.69–2.88 eV. Furthermore, the solar absorbance of the materials was observed to increase from 92 % to 98 % in the UV–Vis range due to doping, this improvement in absorption increases power conversion efficiency.

Synthesis of MnO₂–ZnO for photocatalytic degradation of reactive yellow (RY) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes under irradiation of visible light

A MnO 2 –ZnO heterojunction was synthesized using a simple precipitation method. The as-synthesized MnO 2 –ZnO was characterized and employed as a photocatalyst for the degradation of reactive yellow (RY) and rhodamine B (RhB) dyes in aqueous medium. XRD confirmed that the prepared composite consists of tetragonal MnO 2 and hexagonal wurtzite ZnO phases with an average crystallite size of approximately 26 nm. SEM images revealed that rod-like ZnO particles were embedded within porous MnO 2 clusters, forming a heterogeneous structure with improved dispersion and reduced agglomeration. The photocatalytic performance of MnO 2 –ZnO was significantly enhanced compared with pristine MnO 2 . About 93 % of reactive yellow and 82 % of rhodamine B were degraded within 180 min in the presence of MnO 2 –ZnO as a photocatalyst. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the rate constants decreased with increasing initial dye concentration due to reduced light penetration and competition for active sites. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to the heterojunction interface between MnO 2 and ZnO, which facilitates efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and promotes the formation of reactive hydroxyl radicals. These findings demonstrate that MnO 2 –ZnO can be used as a catalyst for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater under sunlight irradiation.

Dynamic modeling of in vitro ruminal fermentation of agricultural residues using mechanistic and neural network–based approaches under limited experimental information

The in vitro ruminal fermentation of agricultural residues is commonly assessed through measurements of substrate degradation, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, and gas generation. However, modeling this process remains challenging due to the limited availability of experimentally measurable variables and the intrinsic complexity of the rumen ecosystem. This study proposes and compares three dynamic modeling approaches to describe in vitro ruminal fermentation using only experimentally accessible data from control treatments, focusing on maize, sorghum, and oat residues. A phenomenological mechanistic simplified model based on Monod-type kinetics, a feedforward neural network (FNN), and a neural network differential equation model (NNODE) were developed, trained, and evaluated. Experimental pressure measurements were converted into gas concentrations using the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state, ensuring consistency across state variables. Savitzky-Golay filtering was applied to smooth experimental data and estimate time derivatives required for NNODE training. Model performance was assessed using mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean squared error (RMSE) for substrate, VFAs, and gas concentrations. While the NNODE generally exhibited lower prediction errors and improved dynamic consistency (particularly for substrate consumption and gas production) statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test revealed no significant differences in global RMSE among the three models ( p > 0.05). Sensitivity analyses with respect to in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and initial substrate concentration ( S 0 ) highlighted the superior dynamic coherence of the NNODE, although limitations were observed under low substrate concentrations and early VFA production phases. Overall, this study demonstrates that meaningful dynamic models of in vitro ruminal fermentation can be developed under severe data constraints. The results highlight the potential of neural differential equation models as an intermediate approach between mechanistic and data-driven models, while emphasizing the importance of dynamic consistency and careful data preprocessing in complex biological systems.

The accelerating global shift toward renewable energy has intensified the demand for reliable solar power generation. Concentrated solar power (CSP) plants offer a promising utility-scale solution due to their inherent dispatchability, yet their performance is constrained by the intermittency of solar irradiation. Thermal energy storage (TES) mitigates this limitation by storing excess heat during peak insolation and delivering it during low-solar periods, enabling stable and flexible power output. This review examines key TES pathways – sensible heat storage (e.g., molten salts), latent heat storage using phase-change materials (PCMs), and thermochemical energy storage (TCES) – and their roles in improving CSP system performance. TES integration can increase CSP capacity factors from 25–30 % to 40–50 % while reducing the levelized cost of electricity. Current molten-salt systems provide 6–15 h of storage, whereas PCMs and TCES offer up to two- to three-fold higher energy densities compared with conventional sensible-heat media. This review critically compares these technologies in terms of performance, scalability, and integration challenges, identifies key research gaps in high-temperature materials and system design, and outlines future strategies to advance CSP–TES deployment in sustainable energy systems.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange and metoprolol using a novel ternary TiO₂-ZnO/g-C₃N₄ composite: performance under UV and visible light irradiation

Novel ternary photocatalyst TiO 2 -ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 was synthesized via a ball milling-assisted sol-gel method and its photocatalytic performance was tested in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and metoprolol (MTP) under UV-LED and visible light. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen physisorption (BET), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and positive hole production. Optical measurements confirmed that the combination of TiO 2 , ZnO, and g-C 3 N 4 extended the visible light absorption to 2.63 eV. SEM, TEM, FTIR and XPS revelated correct coupling between the three semiconductors, and hole density analysis suggested a synergistic effect, reducing the charge recombination. Additionally, reusability tests demonstrated the chemical stability of the material. In terms of pollutant degradation, the TiO 2 -ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 composite efficiently removed 97.75 % of MO under UV-LED light and 98.57 % under visible light in 180 min. Similarly, MTP degradation test reached 86.42 % and 86.08 % under UV-LED and visible light, respectively, after 180 min. These results highlight the mate-rial’s potential for environmental applications, particularly in contaminant removal through photocatalysis.

Propene is a key compound for the petrochemical industry and is the basis to manufacture many of the material commodities know by humanity today. Ethene-to-propene catalytic technology has been designed to contribute in covering the ascending worldwide demand of propene foreseen for the next years, although such process is still under development nowadays. As far as the ETP reaction is concerned, different solid catalysts have been tested from which the supported Ni materials have been deeply investigated. In this sense, the method by which the Ni is introduced over the support takes a pivotal role in the catalytic activity. Thus, the main goal of this review is to associate the different synthesis methods of the available ETP supported Ni catalysts, particularly the template ion exchange method, to their corresponding active sites and, in turn, to link the later to the experimentally proposed reaction mechanisms. By adopting this focus, the reader is directed to study each Ni-based supported catalyst as an individual entity: how it was synthesized, which Ni phase is predominantly formed through that synthesis procedure, and how those active sites work in the catalysis. This facilitates a clear understanding of its unique mechanics within the ETP catalytic cycle, as well as its limitations and future research opportunities.

Synthesis, characterization, and enhanced photocatalytic performance of a ternary SnO₂/TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ composite: proposal of a novel activation mechanism under near-UV light

Nanoparticulate novel ternary photocatalysts comprising SnO 2 , TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 was successfully synthesized by the wet impregnation method with ethanol. Ternary SnO 2 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 was fully characterized by XRD, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, FTIR, TEM and HRTEM. The results confirmed that the photocatalyst was formed with four phases TiO 2 anatase, TiO 2 rutile, tetragonal rutile-type structure of SnO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 . The band gap energy value of prepared SnO 2 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 was 2.81 eV indicating that this composite can work under both near UV and Visible light. The degradation of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, a persistent pharmaceutical contaminant of environmental interest, was used as a model to evaluate the photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized materials. The test of photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin showed a synergistic effect among SnO 2 , TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 because 90 % of CIP removal was achieved in 150 min. This performance was faster than pristine and binary materials. The ternary photocatalyst SnO 2 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 showed the highest value of the apparent reaction rate constant (0.0142 min −1 ). A novel activation mechanism for SnO 2 /TiO 2Anatase /TiO 2Rutile /g-C 3 N 4 under near UV Light was proposed. Comparing the power of the lamps and the reaction volume, this work suggests that the ternary photocatalyst SnO 2 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 achieved a better performance with respect to what was reported in previous works.

The degradation of Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye in a solar pilot plant has been compared where reflective surfaces were added to the reactor to increase solar irradiation. Taking the tubular reactor as a reference, the effect of adding two types of reflective surfaces with different geometry was analyzed: one of the surfaces consisted of composite parabolic concentrators (CPCs) and the other of a flat reflective surface placed under the tube array. Photocatalytic reaction conditions were considered, with TiO 2 and the TiO 2 /rGO nanocomposite as photocatalysts, as well as without catalyst under photolysis conditions. A pseudo first order kinetic model was used to interpret the results, a function of the intensity of solar irradiation and the area of the tube irradiated, both directly and reflected. To estimate the area of the reactor irradiated by the reflecting surfaces, the ray tracing technique was used. For both catalysts, the highest degradation rates occurred in the presence of CPC-type surfaces. From the apparent kinetic constants, an increase of about 11 % was found for the presence of the flat reflective plate and up to 65 % for the CPC, both with respect to the tubular reactor and nanocomposite material. Based on ray tracing analysis, and according to solar time, the active area reflecting rays on the surface of the reactor was, for the CPC, in the order of 50 % greater than that of the flat reflective plate, which was consistent with the kinetic results between both systems.
