Is there a difference between oral memory and ‘written’ memory? To answer this question, the author undertook fieldwork with storytellers in inner Brittany. Following an examination of the theory of the Great Divide (Walter J. Ong, Jack Goody) regarding this question, the author shows that, on the one hand, memory is more influenced by the internal organization of the domain-object and by the objectives defined by the context than by the channel, and that, on the other, verbatim memory is not in contradiction with a form of memorization which we may qualify as ‘oral’. Zusammenfassung Gibt es einen Unterschied zwischen mündlichem und schriftlichem Gedächtnis? Zur Antwort auf diese Frage hat die Autorin Feldforschungen bei Erzählern in der inneren Bretagne durchgeführt. Bei der Prüfung der Theorie des Great Divide (Walter J. Ong, Jack Goody) zu dieser Frage zeigt die Autorin einerseits, daß das Gedächtnis durch die interne Organisation von Gebiet-Gegenstand und durch die kontextdefinierten Ziele mehr beeinflußt ist als durch Übermittlungswege, und andererseits, daß die wortgetreue Erinnerung nicht im Widerspruch zu einer Form des Erlernens steht, die man als ‘mündlich’ bezeichnen kann.

Sorne fairy-tales gained worldwide popularity through their cinematographic adaptations. In particular, sorne communist countries in Eastern Europe built up a state-run entertainment industry that made fairy-tales into box office hits. One of the most famous directors of Soyuzdetfilm, the Soviet film studio for the young, was Aleksandr Rou, whose movies were also hits in the GDR. The analysis of one of his films, Morozko (1964/65), argues that fairy-tale movies were a popular means both of Soviet education and of the propagation of the Russian national idea (Soviet style). For his adaptation, Rou drew on the artistic language developed by musicians and painters at the end of the nineteenth century. Thus, Morozko follows the model of the national opera, developed by Rimsky-Korsakov, who in turn had made use of fairy-tales. Morozko thus became a kind of Soviet operetta. Résumé Quelques contes populaires ont atteint une popularité internationale à travers leurs adaptations cinématographiques. En particulier, c'étaient les pays communistes de l'Europe de l'Est dont l'industrie de divertissement, financée par des fonds publics, se dédiait à la transformation de contes en films. Un des réalisateurs les plus connus de Soyouzdetfilm, le studio soviétique qui produisait des films pour la jeunesse, était Aleksandr Rou dont les films étaient également des réussites en RDA. L'analyse d'un de ses films à succès, Morozko (1964/65), démontre que les adaptations de contes étaient un instrument favori aussi bien de l'éducation soviétique que de la propagation de l'idée nationale russe dans son interprétation soviétique. À cette fin, on faisait usage du language artistique développé par les compositeurs et peintres à la fin du XIX e siècle. Ainsi, Morozko suit le modèle de l'opéra national développé par Rimski-Korsakov qui s'était également servi de contes populaires. Par conséquent, Morozko est devenu une sorte d'opérette soviétique.

For Serbian Gypsies, telling and listening to stories are important traditional behaviours, shared and transmitted among kin generation after generation. This paper discusses two traditional stories told by Serbian Gypsies: Lena – Losing a River and Cut, Cut Her Hands off! By examining the content of the stories and the social setting in which they are told, it is argued that the tales illustrate how oral narratives can deal with universal adaptive problems, while simultaneously offering guidelines to overcoming these problems in new and unique social environments. Résumé Pour les gitans serbes, raconter et écouter des contes sont des comportements traditionnels importants, partagés et transmis dans la parenté, génération après génération. Cet article étudie deux contes traditionnels racontés par des gitans serbes: Lena – la perte d'une rivière et Coupe, coupe ses mains . À travers l'examen du contenu des contes et du milieu social dans lequel ils sont racontés, il est démontré que ces contes illustrent de quelle manière des contes oraux peuvent traiter de problèmes universels d'adaptation tout en offrant des directives pour surmonter ces problèmes dans des environnements nouveaux et uniques. Zusammenfassung Für die serbischen Roma sind Erzählen und Hören von Geschichten wichtige traditionelle Verhaltensweisen, die Generation für Generation in der Verwandtschaft gemeinsam gepflegt und weitergegeben werden. Der vorliegende Artikel befaßt sich mit zwei von serbischen Roma erzählten traditionellen Erzählungen: Lena – der Verlust eines Flusses und Schlag, schlag ihr die Hände ab . Eine Untersuchung des Inhalts der Geschichten und des sozialen Milieus, in dem sie erzählt werden, zeigt, daß die Geschichten illustrieren, wie mündliche Erzählungen mit universellen Adaptationsproblemen umgehen und gleichzeitig Richtlinien für die Überwindung dieser Probleme in neuen und einzigartigen sozialen Umfeldern bieten.

The present article analyzes the Hebrew story of Johanan and the Scorpion, found in a thirteenth-century manuscript from Northem France (Ms. Oxford [Bodl. Or. 135]), which represents an unusual phenomenon in Jewish literary tradition. Although it appears in a manuscript considered an important milestone in the history of medieval Hebrew literature, and despite the Jewish cultural norm of rewriting literary works again and again, it is the only existing Hebrew version of this theme. The reason it was never revised or copied may be the portrayal of the main character as a Jewish knight who leaves his community and surrenders to the element of ‘the other’, thereby losing his original identity. The assumption is made that these problematic ideas and poetic materials, together with historical circumstances, created the non-acceptance of this story. Résumé Le présent article analyse le conte hébreu de Johanan et le scorpion qui se trouve dans un manuscrit provenant du nord de la France et datant du XIII e siècle (Ms. Oxford [Bodl. Or. 135]). Ce conte représente un phénomène inhabituel dans la tradition littéraire juive: quoiqu'il apparaisse dans un manuscrit qui prend une place importante dans l'histoire de la littérature médiévale hébraïque, et en dépit de l'habitude culturelle juive de récrire toujours de nouveau les œuvres littéraires, il reste la seule version hébraïque existante de ce sujet. La raison pourquoi il n'a jamais été remanié ou recopié pourrait résider dans le fait que le personnage principal est un gentilhomme juif qui quitte sa communauté et s'adonne à l'élément de ‹ l'autre › ce qui le fait perdre son identité originale. Il est donc à supposer que ces idées et matières problématiques aient créé, avec les circonstances historiques, une aversion contre cette histoire. Zusammenfassung Der vorliegende Artikel bietet eine Analyse der hebräischen Erzählung von Johanan und dem Skorpion, die sich in einer nordfranzösischen Handschrift des 13. Jahrhunderts (Ms. Oxford [Bodl. Or. 135]) findet und ein ungewöhnliches Phänomen in der jüdischen literarischen Überlieferung darstellt. Obwohl sie in einem Manuskript erscheint, das als Meilenstein in der Geschichte der mittelalterlichen hebräischen Literatur betrachtet wird, und trotz der jüdischen kulturellen Praxis, literarische Werke wieder und wieder neu zu schreiben, bleibt sie die einzige hebräische Version des Themas. Der Grund dafür, daß sie niemals bearbeitet oder abgeschrieben wurde, mag darin liegen, daß die Hauptfigur ein jüdischer Edelmann ist, der seine Gemeinschaft verläßt und sich dem Element des ‚anderen‘ ergibt, womit er seine ursprüngliche Identität verliert. Es wird vermutet, daß diese problematischen Ideen und Themen zusammen mit den historischen Umständen zur Ablehnung der Geschichte führten.

This article, about a story of a Jewish woman who killed a Nazi in a concentration camp, deals with the problem of the folkloristic treatment of stories set during the Holocaust and recounted by survivors. The analysis of the fourteen versions of the story, its structure and content shows that folklore studies may be able to provide new insight that historical research cannot supply. It shows how the narrators use the story to raise issues that preoccupied the victims of the Holocaust, to express their dreadful situation and their aspirations and to provide a sense to the awful chaos they went through. The story embodies problems surrounding women in the Holocaust and glorifies women and their heroism, thereby offering some consolation to the storytelling society. Such stories were a way to conduct a discourse that expressed the atrocities that happened, the longings of the victims and their search for meaning and played a therapeutic role. Résumé Cet article, sur l'histoire d'une femme juive qui a tué un Nazi dans un camp de concentration, étudie le problème du traitement folklorique d'histoires, racontés par des survivants, qui se rapportent à l'holocauste. L'analyse de quatorze versions de l'histoire, sa structure et son contenu met en évidence que l'étude du folklore peut apporter de nouveaux aspects que la recherche historique est incapable de fournir. Il montre comment les conteurs utilisent l'histoire pour exprimer l'atrocité de la situation qu'ils ont vécue, pour évoquer les préoccupations et aspirations des victimes de l'holocauste et pour donner du sens à l'affreux chaos qu'ils ont traversé. L'histoire rehausse le problème de la femme dans l'holocauste et glorifie les femmes et leur héroïsme ce qui produit un effet consolateur pour la communauté où l'histoire est contée. Raconter de telles histoires était une manière de conduire un discours exprimant les monstruosités des faits, les aspirations des victimes et leur quête d'un sens et jouait un rôle thérapeutique. Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz über die Geschichte einer jüdischen Frau, die in einem Konzentrationslager einen Nazi tötete, befaßt sich mit der folkloristischen Behandlung von Geschichten, die zur Zeit des Holocaust spielen und von Überlebenden erzählt werden. Die Analyse von vierzehn Varianten der Erzählung, ihrer Struktur und ihres Inhalts veranschaulicht, daß die Erzählforschung in der Lage ist, neue Einsichten zu verschaffen, die historische Studien nicht liefern können. Sie zeigt, wie die Erzähler die Geschichte benützen, um ihren schrecklichen Erlebnissen Ausdruck zu verleihen, um Themen zur Sprache zu bringen, die die Opfer des Holocaust beschäftigten, um ihre Hoffnungen auszudrücken und dem entsetzlichen Chaos, durch das sie gingen, einen Sinn zu geben. Die Geschichte handelt von der Problematik von Frauen im Holocaust, sie verherrlicht Frauen und ihr Heldentum und spendet damit der Erzählgemeinschaft einen gewissen Trost. Solche Geschichten boten die Möglichkeit zu einem Diskurs, der durch den Ausdruck der Schrecken und Sehnsüchte und der Suche nach einem Sinn therapeutisch wirkte.

The orphan plays a very prominent role in many African folktales, despite the fact that he is usually the underdog in society. However, it would appear that there is a dearth of scholarly studies on this controversial character in folktales. The tale The Orphan and the Prince has two levels of meaning: the chronological surface level and the deeper structural level where images and symbols signify meaning. This article provides a thematic analysis of the tale and explores these two levels of meaning. The paper also ponders over what we can benefit from studying the tale, as well as what society can do to ameliorate the plight of orphans and the downtrodden people in African society. Résumé L'orphelin joue un rôle très important dans beaucoup de contes africains, malgré le fait que ce personnage compte généralement parmi les défavorisés de la société. Cependant, il semble que peu d'études aient été consacrées à ce caractère controversé. Le conte de l'orphelin et du prince possède deux niveaux de signification: le niveau de surface qui est chronologique et le niveau de la structure sous-jacente où les images et symboles prennent signification. L'article donne une analyse thématique du conte et explore ces deux niveaux de signification. Il réfléchit aussi sur ce que le conte peut nous apprendre et sur ce que la société peut faire pour améliorer la misère des orphelins et des opprimés dans la société africaine. Zusammenfassung Das Waisenkind spielt in vielen afrikanischen Volkserzählungen eine bedeutende Rolle, obwohl es gewöhnlich zu den Benachteiligten der Gesellschaft zählt. Diese kontroverse Figur der Volkserzählung scheint jedoch kaum untersucht zu sein. Die Geschichte vom Waisen und vom Prinzen besitzt zwei Bedeutungsebenen: das chronologische Oberflächenniveau und die Ebene der Tiefenstruktur, auf der Bilder und Symbole Bedeutung erlangen. Auf der Grundlage einer thematischen Analyse der Erzählung werden diese beiden Bedeutungsebenen untersucht. Überlegt wird ferner, welchen Nutzen die Untersuchung der Erzählung bietet und was die Gesellschaft zur Verbesserung des Elends der Waisen und der Unterdrückten in der afrikanischen Gesellschaft tun kann.

An outline of the historical and theoretical foundations is followed by an interpretative and comparative analysis of seventy guiding principles derived from sixty-three fairy-tales of the Brothers Grimm and seventy guiding principles derived from forty-three company guidelines concerning ‘learning from mistakes’. This analysis results in six common core principles. After explaining relevant development approaches and key competencies, a learning portfolio is introduced that is differentiated according to qualification and motivation. Furthermore, twenty maxims for managers, seen from the perspective of fairy-tales, and twenty guiding principles for fairy-tale heroes, seen from the perspective of management, are developed. These maxims differentiate risk-averse error minimization from opportunity-oriented improvement learning. The article is concluded by ‘lessons learned’. Résumé Une esquisse des aspects historiques et théoriques est suivie d'une analyse comparative et interprétative de 70 principes directeurs provenant de 63 contes des frères Grimm et 70 autres provenant de 43 directives d'entreprises, concernant le thème « apprendre de ses erreurs ». Il en résultent six principes communs. Après l'explication des différentes approches développementales et compétences-clé, un portfolio, différencié selon des critères de qualification et de motivation est introduit. Afin d'encourager une culture d'apprentissage mental et social, 20 maximes pour cadres dirigeants, formulées de la perspective du conte, et 20 maximes pour héroïnes et héros de conte, vues de la perspective de gestion d'entreprise, sont développées. Elles sont différenciées à partir d'une réduction d'erreurs due à l'aversion au risque et de l'apprentissage de perfectionnement orienté vers les opportunités. L'article se termine sur les « leçons apprises ».
