Under the rubric of West Germanic consonant gemination the grammatical handbooks treat the Upper German development of geminate r immediately preceding the reflexes of West Germanic */j/. There is, however, no evidence that this rhotic doubling occurred during the same period in which all other consonants were affected by gemination in the emerging West Germanic dialects. Indeed, West Germanic consonant gemination generally describes a process in which all consonants except */r/ were geminated before */j/, voiceless stops were geminated before */l/ and */r/ and voiceless velars before */w/. It is the rhotic's conspicuous escape from this process in the remaining West Germanic dialects which makes its gemination in Upper German so exceptional. Geminate r begins to appear in this particular environment in Alemannic, Frankish and Bavarian manuscripts just prior to 800. It therefore appears that this gemination was a later one, perhaps an outgrowth or generalization of the earlier process, perhaps a separate process altogether. Of course to understand why */r/ was impervious to gemination by */j/ in West Germanic only to become subject to it a few centuries later, we must understand something of the mechanics of the gemination process itself. Determining the articulation of r in both West Germanic and the Upper German dialects also becomes of prime importance in accounting for this chronology.
