10 Heritage Holmes
-
James Chapman
Abstract
Chapter 10 focuses on Granada Television’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–85) and its various later iterations. These high-end television adaptations – including the first dramatisation of Holmes’s fateful meeting with his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in ‘The Final Problem’ – are placed within the context of ‘heritage’ drama in the 1980s. The chapter explores the ideological and cultural contexts of the Granada series and considers how and why it departed from the original intent of faithful adaptation in the 1990s. The chapter also includes other ‘heritage Holmes’ adaptations, including a BBC ‘classic serial’ of The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1982 and a brace of television films produced by Sy Weintraub in 1983.
