7 Television Holmes
-
James Chapman
Abstract
Chapter 7 explores the different production ecologies and adaptation strategies of several Sherlock Holmes television series of the 1950s and 1960s. Stanley Reynolds produced the thirty-nine--episode telefilm series Sherlock Holmes in the mid-1950s with Ronald Howard: the series – comprising mostly original stories rather than adaptations of Doyle – has tended to be overlooked by Holmes fans because it is uncanonical. In the mid-1960s the BBC’s Sherlock Holmes was an attempt to provide a culturally authentic adaptation of the canonical stories. The chapter documents the sometimes tense relationship between the BBC and the Doyle estate and the contemporary reception of the series.
