Six The Poor Law Commission of 1905–09: a view from a century on
-
John Offer
Abstract
This chapter examines the impact the Poor Law Commission of 1905–09 has had on contemporary welfare policy. It highlights the importance of continuity and change in the welfare state, and shows how surprisingly contemporary and enduring the issues tackled by the Commission are. It notes that pensions, and care, and social change are still debated, and how to balance direct provision with other kinds of support to achieve social cohesion and individual well-being.
