Abstract
This chapter determines the significance of the re-election of George Bush for social policy in the US, by using an analysis of two important legislative initiatives. The first is the changes to the Medicare system for prescription payments that were introduced in 2003. The second is the proposed changes to the social insurance pensions that would effectively privatise and individualise the pensions system. The chapter also shows how the passage of legislation reforming the Medicare system was the result of financial scare-mongering.
