SEVENTEEN Policy research in academic institutions
-
Chumphol Aunphattanasilp
Abstract
This chapter seeks to investigate policy research conducted by academic institutions to identify the key paradigms that influence Thailand’s policy epistemic community. With the exploration of various policy research, the chapter points out that most existing policy studies in this country are either empirical-based or normative-based and that these are not usually connected to real policy debates and analysis. With the paradigmatic homogeneity, most works reproduce similar explanations, logics and imaginations. The chapter highlights that there is a lack of research that can be used to guide policy direction in the real world. There are few pragmatic and transformative policy studies that aim to handle real-world problems and make substantive changes. The more impactful policy studies are the advocacy projects that come with a defined goal depending on who is commissioning the project. The chapter assesses that these works rarely generate specific policy knowledge and serious discussions.
