Perspektiven auf die sprachhistorische Lexikographie nach dem Deutschen Wörterbuch

Abstract
The present article discusses the achievements and deficiencies of the Deutsches Wörterbuch (DWB), the historical dictionary of German. Using the articles Frau and Fräulein as examples, it can be shown that the DWB gives new insights into the history of these much discussed words. What emerges also, however, is the fact that, in the framework of the DWB tradition, many relevant aspects of the history of these word cannot be dealt with in an adequate way. Specifically, the context of word families and word fields, but also sociological aspects of word history remain unexplained in the DWB articles. Therefore, it is argued, the historical lexicography of the future has to go new ways in dictionary making in order to give a more satisfactory account of historical lexicology.
