Abstract
The spectrum of methods for formally marking proper names extends between the following extremes: Fijian uses the same inventory for proper names and common nouns but uses ko before proper names and na before common nouns. The other extreme is when proper names and common nouns consist of completely separate inventories. This is the case for first names in many European languages. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, many languages therefore use methods of proper name marking which are situated between syntagmatic and paradigmatic strategies. This paper presents a typological summary of formal onymic marking, the focus being on grammatical strategies.
