    Dr. Nico Buitendag is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Law at North-West University, South Africa. His work draws on autopoietic systems theory to analyse the intersections of international law, legal theory and environmental concerns. He has published in the Journal of Law and Society, Systems Research and Behavioural Science, and Thesis Eleven, including translations into English of Niklas Luhmann. His most recent work concerns the future of sovereignty under the threat of rising sea-levels, and the challenging relationship between legal scholarship and practice in environmental law. He holds the degrees LLB LLM (Pretoria), LLM (Leiden) and LLD (Kyoto).
