Kuyavian bronzes or Stanomin-style dress accessories – studies on the chronology of the early Iron Age in Central Europe

Abstract
More than sixty years ago, J. Kostrzewski published a paper titled Ze studiów nad wczesnym okresem żelaznym w Polsce (Studies on the early Iron Age in Poland; in the German version Studien über die ältere Eisenzeit in Polen). The article was a product of his long-time research, readings and searches conducted during the turbulent first half of the 20th century. Kostrzewski’s work is still one of Poland’s basic chronological studies of the HaC and HaD. The text contained a substantial analysis of the “Kuyavian bronzes”, also called the “Stanomin-style” dress accessories, named after the hoard from Stanomin.
New finds, as well as 14C and dendrochronological datings, significantly changed our understanding of the cultural processes in Poland’s early Iron Age. The dating of the “Kuyavian bronzes” and the interpretation of the associated phenomena have never been the subject of a comprehensive study. The following text shall focus on this specific category of metal artefacts – crucial for understanding the chronological variation of the Polish early Iron Age.
Résumé
Il y a plus de soixante ans, J. Kostrzewski publiait un article Ze studiów nad wczesnym okresem żelaznym w Polsce (version en langue allemande Studien Ober die altere Eisenzeit in Polen). Il est le résultat de nombreuses années de recherches, de lectures et d’interrogations, menées dans la réalité de la turbulente première moitié du XXe siècle. Ce travail reste l’une des études fondamentales sur la chronologie des Ha C et Ha D en Pologne. Dans ce texte, une partie importante était l’analyse des “bronzes kuyaviens”, également appelés dans la littérature “ornements de style Stanomin”, provenant du magot de Stanomin.
Nowe odkrycia oraz wyniki datowań 14C i dendrochronologicznych znacząco zmieniły nasz obraz procesów kulturowych we wczesnej epoce żelaza w Polsce. Datowanie „brązów kujawskich” i interpretacja zjawisk z nimi związanych nie była dotychczas przedmiotem całościowego opracowania. W prezentowany tekście skupiam się właśnie na tej grupie znalezisk, uznając, że są one jedną z kluczowych kategorii zabytków metalowych dla poznania zmienności chronologicznej wczesnej epoki żelaza w Polsce.
Zusammenfassung
Vor mehr als sechzig Jahren veröffentlichte J. Kostrzewski einen Artikel Ze studiów nad wczesnym okresem żelaznym w Polsce (Studien über die ältere Eisenzeit in Polen). Es war das Ergebnis jahrelanger Recherchen, Lektüren und Rückfragen, die in einer Zeit turbulenten ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts durchgeführt wurden. Diese Arbeit ist nach wie vor eine der grundlegenden Studien zur Chronologie von Ha C und Ha D in Polen. Ein wichtiger Teil dieses Textes war die Analyse der „kuyavischen Bronzen“, die in der Literatur auch als „Stanomin-Schmuckstücke“ bezeichnet werden, benannt nach dem Hort von Stanomin.
Neue Funde und die Ergebnisse von 14C- und dendrochronologischen Untersuchungen haben unser Bild von den kulturellen Prozessen im früheisenzeitlichen Polen erheblich verändert. Die Datierung der „kuyavischen Bronzen“ und die Deutung der mit ihnen verbundenen Phänomene war bislang kein Gegenstand einer umfassenden Studie. Im vorliegenden Text konzentriert sich der Autor auf diese Fundgruppe, da er diese als eine der wichtigsten Kategorien von Metallartefakten für die Kenntnis der chronologischen Variabilität der frühen Eisenzeit in Polen betrachtet.

Ponad sześćdziesiąt lat temu J. Kostrzewski opublikował artykuł Ze studiów nad wczesnym okresem żelaznym w Polsce (niemieckojęzyczna wersja Studien über die ältere Eisenzeit in Polen). Był on wynikiem wielu lat badań, lektur i kwerend, prowadzonych w realiach burzliwej pierwszej połowy XX wieku. Praca ta nadal jest jednym z podstawowych opracowań na temat chronologii HaC i HaD w Polsce. W tym tekście istotną część stanowiła analiza „brązów kujawskich”, określanych w literaturze również jako „ozdoby w stylu stanomińskim”, od skarbu ze Stanomina.
De nouvelles découvertes et les résultats des datations 14C et dendrochronologiques ont considérablement modifié notre image des processus culturels dans la Pologne du premier âge du fer. La datation des “bronzes de Kuyavian” et l’interprétation des phénomènes qui leur sont associés n’ont pas fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie jusqu’à présent. Dans le texte présenté, je me concentre sur ce groupe de découvertes, les considérant comme l’une des catégories clés d’artefacts métalliques pour la connaissance de la variabilité chronologique du premier âge du fer en Pologne.
