Source of material

To a stirred solution of 4-(amino(phenyl)methyl)-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (623 mg, 2.0 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL) was added triethylamine (607 mg, 6 mmol) and 4-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride (458 mg, 2.4 mmol). The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature. After completion of the reaction, monitored by TLC, the mixture was quenched with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (20 mL), and extracted with dichloromethane (3 × 20 mL). The organic phase was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (petroleum ether /ethyl acetate 10:1) on silica gel to afford the title compound as a white solid in yield 68%.

Experimental details

All hydrogen atoms were placed geometrically on calculated positions using a riding model (SHELX program [2]).

Discussion

The diarylmethylamines and their derivatives as an important class of biologically active natural products and pharmaceuticals attracted the attention of organic and medicinal chemists [3], [4], [5], [6]. For example, cetirizine, is a second-generation antihistamine used in the treatment of hay fever, allergies, angioedema, and urticaria [7]. Flunarizine is effective in the prophylaxis of migraine, occlusive peripheral vascular disease, vertigo of central and peripheral origin, and as an adjuvant in the therapy of epilepsy [8]. In addition, diarylmethylamines are also widely used as important synthetic intermediates in medicinal chemistry [9]. The geometry and labeling for the crystal structure of the title complex is depicted in the figure. All parameters are in the expected ranges.
