Abstract

The core curriculums for art education in junior and senior grades in high schools (Gymnasium) and comprehensive schools (Gesamtschule) in North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) describe relevant tasks and objectives and set competency-oriented standards with focus on core subjects. The implementation of these standards is determined by the teachers themselves, who have the freedom and the duty to design the school-internal curricula and select concrete topics. Based on the core curriculums, this article illustrates the opportunities that focussing on objects from the Middle Ages will bring, how the tasks and objectives of art education can be met and why it is particularly well-suited for obtaining specific prescribed competencies. In this context, the general prospects for integrating medieval topics into the syllabus in addition to concrete examples for arts classes of different grades will be presented and existing issues will be critically examined. Specific focus is given to hands-on learning outside the classroom. By visiting locations and exploring tangible objects, students can partake more actively in their cultural environment. By closely examining the objects, students can directly experience the continuity and upheavals of medieval (art) history. The material objects represent permanence, but their cognitive appropriation also invites students to consider foreignness and discontinuities.
