First EuCheMS Congress on Green and Sustainable Chemistry

It was an honor and pleasure for the Hungarian Chemical Society to undertake the work of the organization of the 1st EuCheMS Congress on Green and Sustainable Chemistry. The venue of the Congress was the Hotel Flamenco in Budapest, the beautiful capital of Hungary, from 13 to 15 October, 2013. The idea of the organization of the conference was put forward by the EuCheMS Working Party on Green and Sustainable Chemistry. The aim of the scientific program was to provide an interactive forum for the exchange and harmonization of ideas and establishing fruitful personal contacts among scientists and industrial professionals interested in this relatively new but rapidly growing field of the green and sustainable chemistry.
The congress had 105 participants arriving from 25 countries (18 from Europe and 7 outside of Europe). Sponsors and exhibitors (altogether 7) contributed to the success of the conference. Their generous assistance was highly appreciated and hereby gratefully thanked. The 2-day event included 5 Sections: 1. Novel synthetic methodologies towards sustainability, 2. Bioresources, 3. Education and assessment methods in green chemistry, 4. Analysis and controlling methods in green chemistry, 5. Energy issues and climate change. Scientific contributions included 45 lectures and 35 posters delivered by the experts of the field. The first and second sections attracted the highest number of presentations held mainly by organic chemists. The other three sections refreshingly contributed to enjoy a wider spectrum of green and sustainable chemistry. The broad variety of contributions adequately covered those 12 principles of green chemistry which were phrased by P. Anastas and J.C. Warner in 2006.
The call for publication of the manuscripts in this special issue of Green Processing and Synthesis went out to the participants of the 1st EuCheMS Congress in order to invite everybody for publication in a quality journal. Authors demonstrate that this field of research is well-represented and important for the European chemists.
The 1st EuCheMS Congress on Green and Sustainable Chemistry was a unique event being the first in a series of conferences starting in 2013. The series will be continued: the venue and the date will appear after the next meeting of the EuCheMS Working Party on Green and Sustainable Chemistry.
Without chemistry the future is not sustainable but the sustainable future needs green chemistry!
