Case Studies on the Effect of Conservation on the Appearance of Historic Wallpapers

SUMMARIES

Historic wallpapers are particularly subject to compromises in their condition and appearance because of the fragility of their materials, the vast areas they cover and the exposure to which they are subject. The development of their conservation as a specialty acknowledges that historic wallpapers are worthy recipients of the extraordinary resources required to achieve the necessary high standards of treatment. Six projects are examined to illustrate the damage to which historic wallpapers are subject and a variety of options for their treatment. There is a particular focus on what constitutes the integrity of a room in which historic wallpaper is mounted and how the appearance of a wallpaper that is compromised can be changed to highlight that integrity. The credibility of their change in appearance is founded on their improvement in condition and is sustained by the direction of connoisseurship and craftsmanship to that end.

Lors de la restauration de papiers peints historiques il a souvent fallu faire des compromis quant à leur état et à leur aspect en raison de la fragilité des matériaux les constituant, à cause des grandes surfaces qu'ils recouvrent ainsi que de l'exposition à laquelle ils sont soumis. Il s'agit en effet d'un domaine spécial dans la restauration du papier, ce qui signifie que des moyens extraordinaires sont déployés pour répondre aux exigences d'un traitement de haut niveau. On examinera six projets pour illustrer les dommages auxquels sont soumis les papiers peints historiques ainsi que différentes méthodes de traitement possibles. Un accent tout particulier sera mis sur ce qui constitue le caractère d'une pièce dont les murs sont tapissés de papiers peints historiques et comment l'aspect du papier peint qui a été endommagé pourra être modifié afin de rehausser ce caractère. De telles modifications sont justifiées par le fait qu'elles améliorent l'état du papier et qu'elles sont menées par des connaisseurs et des artisans.

Bei der Restaurierung historischer Tapeten muß wegen ihres fragilen Zustandes, ihrer großen Flächen und ihrer Zweckbestimmung als permanente Ausstellungsstücke häufig auf die strenge Einhaltung konservatorischer Grundsätze bezüglich Zustand und Erscheinungsbild abgewichen werden. Es handelt sich in der Tat um ein Spezialgebiet in der Papierrestaurierung, und das bedeutet, daß man die Objekte der für einen hohen Behandlungsstandard erforderlichen ungewöhnlichen Maßnahmen und Hilfsmittel für würdig hält. Es werden sechs einschlägige Projekte besprochen, um die Schäden, die an historischen Tapeten auftreten, und die verschiedenen Behandlungsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen. Besonderes Gewicht wird auf den Gesichtspunkt gelegt, daß es auf das Erscheinungsbild des Raumes ankommt, der mit der Tapete ausgestattet ist und wie konservatorisch unvermeidbare Veränderungen modifiziert werden können, um dieses Erscheinungsbild zu verdeutlichen. Solche Veränderungen werden durch die mit ihnen erreichte Verbesserung des materiellen Zustandes gerechtfertigt. Sie müssen getragen sein von Kennerschaft und Handwerkskunst.
