    Stefan Höfler is a historical linguist specializing in nominal morphology, morphosyntax, sound change, and derivational semantics. He has expertise in Homeric linguistics, Greek historical phonology, dialectology, and word-formation, as well as in the synchronic and diachronic grammar and etymology of Latin. He earned his PhD in Indo-European Linguistics from the University of Vienna and has held postdoctoral positions at Harvard University and the University of Copenhagen. Currently, he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Linguistics, University of Vienna, and holds a scholarship funded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Abstract

This paper discusses the etymology and derivational prehistory of Ancient Greek κνίση f., a word that bears two very different meanings, namely ‘steam, savor of a burnt sacrifice’ and ‘caul fat, fat netting’ (i.e. the substance that causes this steam, savor). It is argued that these two meanings reflect the two different possible readings of the underlying possessive adjective *knihₓd-s-ó-, viz. ‘having an intense smell’ and ‘causing an intense smell’. As an aside, the adjective κνισόζ (the likely continuant of *knihₓd-s-ó-) and the verb κνισόομαι receive a philological treatment. It is shown that these refer to the negative and unwanted quality of olive oil that has been overheated (i.e. ‘burnt, bitter, smelly (vel sim.)’).
