Hyperbaton in Herodotus: A Functional Discourse Grammar Perspective

    Cassandra Freiberg studied Indo-European languages and culture, archaeology, and law at the universities of Jena and Passau. Her dissertation, submitted to Humboldt University Berlin in 2022, provides a first systematic framework for the thriving new subdiscipline of prosodic reconstruction, developed by a corpus study on Herodotus’ Histories. While her main research focus is thus on the prosody, phonology and pragmatics especially of the Greek language, she also functioned as project manager to ALEW 2.0, the online version of Altlitauisches etymologisches Wörterbuch (ed. Wolfgang Hock), between 2017 and 2023.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to give a systematic overview of different kinds of hyperbaton in Herodotus. Different from existing accounts, it will be argued that hyperbaton does not only operate on the pragmatic Layer of Communicated Content (= information structure), but also on the Layers of the Discourse Act and the Subact, respectively. On a more general note, the paper makes some suggestions as to how the hypothesized change in morphosyntactic language type proposed by DS (2000) for Ancient Greek could be modelled and evaluated in more detail within a Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) framework.
