Abstract
In his history of Greek comedy, Euanthius offers the curious term satyra for the phase of the Middle Comedy, which has not been explained so far. The article shows that Euanthius systematically refers to Roman satire by interweaving the history of comedy and satire, which share a common focus in the political comedy historiography of the Peripatos. In this context, he also offers a new solution to the much-debated problem of the Greek origin of satire. The denomination satyra, based on a combination of information and hypotheses from centuries of philological discussion, can be explained by Euanthius’ bicultural conception of Greek comedy history.
