Abstract

Popular and rhetorical interest in the knowable (non-mythic) past, developing as Greece slipped into the Peloponnesian War, drove both comic and historiographic recollections. While comic recollection seems not to have noticed historiography as a source, historians in all eras drew on comedy when treating prominent individuals and popular trends political, social, and intellectual.
