W. James Potter is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He is the author of 30 books includingDigital Media Effects ,Major Theories of Media Effects ,7 Skills of Media Literacy , and the best-sellingMedia Literacy , which has been translated into six languages and is now in its eleventh edition.
Abstract
Since the availability of interactive capabilities, the mass media have increased their power to attract audiences and to exert a wider range of effects. The public has been noticing many new effects on individuals and society, and their concern with the increasing influence of the media has grown to an extent that many states have started mandating media literacy instruction in their public curricula. Those mandates require educators to design materials, lessons, and teacher re-training programs to deliver the kind of instruction that can increase media literacy throughout the population. When faced with so many decisions about how to design a successful media literacy program as well as measures that document changes in media literacy, these educators need a resource to inform their decisions. Fortunately, there is a great number of publications about media literacy, but unfortunately, that literature is very limited in its practical value.
