5 Nationalism

Abstract
The chapter reviews feminist political geographies’ engagement with the concept of nationalism. It outlines the contributions feminist political geographers have made to nationalism research in general and the field of geographies of nationalism in particular. First, we show how an intersectional perspective on bodies and their relation to nationalism offers new insights into geographies of nationalism. We then highlight two conceptual innovations in the research on nationalism made by feminist political geographers, namely, the national intimate and affective nationalism. We close with an outlook of possible future research directions for feminist political geographies of nationalism by directing attention toward the way the global right reproduces ideas of gendered, racialized nationalisms and the importance of what we call digital intimate nationalisms.
