30 The Workplace
-
Emily Reid-Musson
Abstract
Approaching the workplace through a feminist political geography lens involves critically examining boundaries around how the workplace is defined and categorized. These boundary processes differentially impact workers by shaping the power they harness in their work and in society. The chapter examines three central issues related to the workplace discussed in feminist political geography and adjacent fields. These are: first, debates surrounding the gendered definitions of work and the workplace; second, socially constructed and embodied identities and subjectivities as inherent to workplace processes; and third, workplaces as relational and unbounded processes. The chapter then highlights the power dynamics of workplace im/mobilities that impact migrant and delivery workers as a particularly innovative area of recent scholarship on the workplace. The chapter concludes by proposing potential future research directions for research on the workplace in feminist political geography that relate to climate change and rapid technological change.
