Abstract

The topic of this chapter is an unrealised project by the Swedish court architect Nicodemus Tessin the YoungerTessin, Nicodemus the Younger for a royal coronation and burial church in StockholmStockholm. It examines the ways in which the seven-branched candelabra could visually and in interaction with other media evoke, model, and validate principles of sacred kingship in Sweden in the period of the so-called envälde (‘autocracy’) around 1700. In addition to formal and typological aspects of the project, the planned arrangement of the candelabrum and its meaning will be discussed in the light of the question of how older theological matters of thought were reinterpreted from a renewed confessional and monarchical perspective. Finally, the chapter seeks to reconstruct the intended integration of the candelabrum into performative acts, especially during the ceremonies of anointment and coronation.
