Abstract

In the early modern period, the Menorah rarely appears in images of biblical history even though the Temple of JerusalemJerusalemJerusalemSolomon’s Temple often does. The Menorah is very rarly represented in the Sposalizio (the wedding of Mary and Joseph). Depictions of the Expulsion of Heliodorus, especially by Raphael in the Vatican Stanze, and the Expulsion of the Merchants from the Temple integrate this important symbol of Judaism into the pictorial narrative. This chapter examines various aspects: Firstly, it focuses on the modes of representation of these different attempts at reconstruction, some of which are characterized by meticulous archaeological interest, while others show no preoccupation with detail. Secondly, the respective staging of the Menorah in its spatial context will be considered. Finally, the performative and ritual aspects that characterize the meaning of the respective biblical story will be examined. Of particular interest is the fact that the main protagonist in the Expulsion of Heliodorus is the Jewish high priest, while in the Expulsion of the Merchants from the Temple, Jesus determines the events in the Jerusalem Temple.
