Chapter 12 A Quasi-optimal Technique for Rebalancing a Cryptocurrency Wallet

Abstract
The cryptocurrency market is developing dynamically. However, it faces many challenges unfamiliar to traditional exchanges, like low liquidity of instruments, rigorous time restriction for algorithmic trading and a noticeable probability of transaction failure due to the growing competition from other market participants. These are the main reasons why portfolio structure is likely to be far from optimal in the case of a sequence of transactions on the crypto exchange. In this situation, a rebalancing technique in the investors’ portfolio should be deployed. This article presents an approach that can be formulated as a linear programming task. The theoretical background of this optimisation problem is well understood. However, in the field of cryptocurrencies, it should be considered innovative. In addition to the new application, the added value is both the indication of a non-obvious optimisation criterion as well as the acceptance of the solution’s approximation resulting not from the lack of accuracy in solving the task but from the time differences between the acquisition of input data and the implementation of the indicated, output sequence of activities. An integral part of the study was scenario analysis aimed at verification of the developed solutions. It confirms the effectiveness of the proposed approach, measured by the minimisation of currency exchange costs. The proposed quasi-optimal technique for restoring the target portfolio structure is universal regarding the possibility of generalisation and full scalability to any cryptocurrency exchange.
