Tillich, Pandemic, and Video Games

Abstract
Paul Tillich engaged art extensively during his lifetime and developed his theology of culture as a result of that engagement. Just as expressionist and impressionist paintings that caught his attention were popular in their day, video games are now one of the most successful and influential art forms in the world. The most relevant aspects of Tillich’s thought for illuminating video games and the meaning they can convey to those who play them are (1) personal courage that can overcome estrangement and (2) the development of a theonomous inclusive whole in reaction to heteronomous forces of domination and the conflicts with personal autonomy they create. After describing how conflicts between heteronomy and autonomy were overcome within the video game industry, it will be shown how video games enabled some Christians and Muslims to overcome pandemic restrictions that separated their communities better than other forms of technology.
