Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the regulatory landscape surrounding Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in various jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, and Australia. PFAS, which have been manufactured since the 1950s, gained significant regulatory attention in the early 2000s due to advancements in testing capabilities. The chapter discusses the global actions taken under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants to eliminate or restrict the use of key PFAS compounds. It further explores the specific regulatory measures adopted by Canada and the United States, highlighting the differences in their approaches to managing PFAS in the environment. Additionally, the chapter delves into Australia’s precautionary approach and the development of the PFAS National Environment Management Plan (PFAS NEMP), which provides a risk-based framework for assessing and regulating PFAS-contaminated materials and sites. Through a detailed examination of these regulatory perspectives, the chapter aims to shed light on the evolving efforts to address the environmental and health impacts of PFAS globally.
