Abstract

This chapter brings together the fields of Disability Studies and Classical Reception to pose a “crip” reading of one of Greek antiquity’s most iconic figures: the Venus de Milo. Considering the ancient statue alongside its contemporary receptions in Mary Duffy’s photo series “Cutting the Ties that Bind (Heroes)” and the documentary Vital Signs: Crip Culture Talks Back, Marc Quinn’s sculpture Alison Lapper Pregnant, and the Association Nationale France of Humanity and Inclusion’s campaign #BodyCan’tWait, I explore how the Venus de Milo can help us rethink concepts like fragmentation, wholeness, repair, and female bodily beauty. I argue that Venus has become a touchstone for artists and scholars looking to explore disabled modes of embodiment in visual art, aesthetics, and public spaces. “Cripping” Venus allows us to challenge our assumptions about the form and value of the idealized “classical body” and to open up new discourses of disability and disabled futurity.
