Classical Reception Meets Pedagogy: The Creation and Uses of the Panoply Vase Animation Project's Our Mythical Childhood and Locus Ludi Animations

Abstract
The Panoply Vase Animation Project makes animations from the scenes on real ancient artefacts (www.panoply.org.uk). The animations are both artistic works of classical reception and a versatile pedagogical tool. Animation undoes the fixity of an image and reveals the possibilities that surrounded its creation. The process of examining an artefact, watching its animation, and considering alternatives helps non-specialists to understand the original scene, to understand the process of choice needed to create that scene, to recognise the interpretation that has led to the animation, and to have confidence in their own creative responses to ancient artefacts - responses which draw on and reinforce what they have learned about ancient culture. This chapter, by one of the creators of the animations, discusses the development of the animations, offering insight into a unique form of classical reception which combines scholarship, scholarly collaboration, and artistry.
