Transparency and Enigma in the Age of Goethe
-
Allen Speight
Abstract
This paper explores the oscillation between impulses to the transparent and to the enigmatic in conceptions of art, nature and religion during the Goethezeit. Examining the relation between veiled and unveiled image first in late antiquity and then in figures like Reinhold, Schiller and Kant, the paper then focuses on the respective contributions of Goethe’s notion of öffentliches Geheimnis (or “open mystery”) and Hegel’s account of the relation between symbolic and classical forms of art.
