Abstract

If Riehl’s solution of the psychophysical problem can be regarded as a form of psychophysical parallelism, this designation must be sharply qualified: Riehl seldom uses the term, and expresses serious reservations concerning its dualistic form which is incompatible with his theory of monism. Riehl’s approach is closely related to his interpretation of the Critique of Pure Reason, and especially that of the Paralogism of the first edition, whose real merit is precisely the refutation of dualism. In fact, one and the same thing which, however, we do not recognize in itself, is the “carrier” of the external appearances and of the appearances of consciousness. Thus, Riehl’s monism is a theory of identity: it allows us to conclude the identity of the real process underlying this double-sided appearance. However, Riehl admits the relevance of a methodological parallelism. In this sense, physiological research and psychological analysis are only opposite directions of research. They do not study different or rather separate objects.
