Manual of Romance Word Classes
This chapter is in the book Manual of Romance Word Classes

Abstract

Romance Creole languages are spoken around the world by some 18 million speakers. They are mainly plantation Creoles but some Portuguese Creoles developed around trading posts and Spanish-related Palenquero is a Maroon Creole. Although Romance Creoles share commonalities within each specific group of Creoles, whether Portuguese, Spanish, or French, clear differences also exist between the French creoles of the Atlantic and of the Indian Ocean or between the Iberian creoles of South America, of Africa, and of Asia. Romance Creoles are mainly analytic languages with fixed grammatical categories and reduced inflectional and derivational morphology as compared to their Romance lexifiers. These languages are also characterised by the flexibility and iconicity of some of their linguistic categories. The chapter surveys three major lexical classes (Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives), ideophones, and the morphological process of reduplication in Romance Creoles.
