22 Word classes in Romansh
-
Matthias Grünert
Abstract
In the field of world classes, Romansh exhibits a combination of features that can be linked to its status as a minority language on the periphery of the Romancespeaking world. The decentralised character of Romansh resulting from its minority status is reflected in a pronounced regional differentiation. The analysis of empirical language data leads to postulating categories that run across word classes, whereby different delimitations may have to be made depending on the regional variety considered. In some cases, morphological distinctions require adherence to traditional word classes or the recognition of subordinate functional categories. Furthermore, it must be noted that contact with Germanic varieties over the centuries has contributed to peculiarities in the availability and use of certain particle and verbal categories. These peculiarities are outstanding features of Romansh and clearly set it apart from other Romance languages.
