Abstract

From the outset, the category preposition (P) has belonged to the set of parts of speech, and several features of the original definition are still present in today’s approaches: Ps are invariable words that precede a nominal complement, exerting constraints, typically imposition of case, upon it. They form a phrase with the complement, integrating it into a higher order structure. There is also a consensus that the category P has no clear-cut boundaries with the other categories of invariable items, in particular with adverbs, and occupies an intermediate position between closed grammatical and open lexical categories, some members exhibiting more grammatical usages and others being nearer to the lexical pole. This lack of homogeneity also concerns the dimensions of phonetics, syntax, semantics, and internal structure.
