Decorated clay hearths from Hellenistic Thrace / Les foyers en argile décorés d’époque hellénistique en Thrace
Abstract
The paper presents an in-depth study of decorated clay hearths of Hellenistic Thrace, commonly known in Bulgarian scientific literature as escharae (ἐσχάραι). Archaeological research over the past decade has traced their growing distribution across 60 different archaeological sites in Bulgaria and southeastern Romania. The earliest finds among these hearths are dated to the middle, or third quarter, of the 4th century BC and the latest ones to the 1st century BC-1st century AD. A review of the contexts in which decorated clay hearths have been found reveals the following sites types: settlements (of varying status and ethnic composition), funerary contexts and cult places. The site analysis is supplemented by a review of the archaeological materials and evidence discovered in, on, and around these hearths. An examination of the technological features of these hearths is achieved through an analysis of their construction phases and the processes and techniques applied in their decoration and the tools used. In line with this, data from archaeometric studies carried out on these structures, such as the reproduction of firing temperatures and the analyses of organic residue, will be considered. Finally, the main decorative patterns and motifs used in these hearths in Thrace is assessed through a comparative study with similar structures discovered in other geographic and cultural contexts of the Late Iron Age.
