Chapter 18 Networks
-
Andrew Pilny
Abstract
This chapter explores how researchers have examined organizational communication through the lens of social networks. It begins by introducing the concept of network thinking, which emphasizes how networks can be understood both as a structure and as an organizing logic. The chapter then delves into an informal systematic review, summarizing and critiquing the existing literature on social networks and organizational communication. This includes networks as an explanation (i.e., a predictor variable), networks as an outcome (i.e., a dependent variable), and networks as the focus of novel theory construction. Drawing from various empirical studies, the chapter then explores how social network analysis has been used in an organizational communication context. It discusses the most common and uncommon network measures and models. All in all, the chapter concludes with theoretical and empirical gaps based on the review, including (1) expanding upon outcomes predicted by social networks, (2) more consideration of environmental and macro factors in network theorizing, (3) more progress towards novel organizational communication network theories, and (4) continuing to pursue longitudinal designs.
