Abstract

In 2018, we published a chapter in the book Intelligent Computing and Optimization about how smart city tools, solutions and applications alter the contemporary notion of governance and lead to innovative methodologies for territorial planning [1]. We now come back to show the progress that has been made during the past 3 years in the sector, and see how these tools have really transformed the governance processes in cities where they are applied. Our new review of literature reveals how the processes of production/realization of spatial configurations are changing rapidly, both for the peculiarities of the tools that are used today for their management and for the new social and urban realities. The tools are now temporally and structurally unsuitable for reacting promptly (and in a sustainable way) to the economic and spatial needs of the population.
