Abstract

While Asia as a continent has enjoyed nearly 40% of the total installed wind energy capacity, the contribution of some countries in the region is less significant. Turkmenistan as an important oil and gas producing country is a major exporter of electricity in Central Asia. The country has an enormous potential for wind and solar energy development overshadowed by its wealth of oil and gas. When choosing a region for the designing of wind installations, it is imperative to take special attention to the nature of the wind. This mainly refers to high spatial and temporal irregularities, as well as wind variability. With the correct determination of the wind energy potential, it is possible to solve the energy, economic, environmental and social issues of the country. Moreover, there is an opportunity to mitigate climate change on wind power plants basis, and their resources, environmental benefits, goals and objectives on the scientific methodological basis in the field of wind power for the implementation of state programs on energy saving in Turkmenistan and energy supply of the region. On the basis of the performed scientific work, wind energy resources and environmental potentials in the territory of Turkmenistan have been determined, and a database has been created for the compilation of a wind energy cadaster.
