Abstract
In this chapter, we provide an overview of simple and complex adpositions in West Germanic languages, focusing in particular on German, Dutch, and English. We show that the class of prepositions is not a closed class in these languages, but that there are several ways in which it is productively extended. The focus of this chapter is on structural and diachronic aspects of the highlyproductive [P (Det) N P]-constructions (i.e. the structural pattern ‘preposition - (determiner) - noun - preposition’), for example, Nl. met betrekking tot, G. in Bezug auf, and Eng. with regard to.
